Colosimo replaced as Heart captain

Updated September 27, 2011 20:10:55

Brazilian midfielder Fred has replaced Simon Colosimo as captain of Melbourne Heart.

Fred was a key member of Melbourne Victory's first premiership side in his original one-year stint in the A-League in 2006/07.

He was lured back to Australia by the Heart for the upcoming campaign after a successful period in the US Major League Soccer.

"Fred has excited everybody at the club since his arrival," said Heart coach John van't Schip.

"His quality as a player and fantastic personality are exactly what we thought they would be."

Van 't Schip says Colosimo will continue to be a key member of his squad.

"Simon has worked tirelessly for the club and remains an important senior member of our team," he said.

"He's had an interrupted preseason and we owe it to Simon to give him the best chance of playing every match this season without the extra work that comes with being captain."
