Everton has reached an agreement in principle to bring American international Landon Donovan back to Goodison Park on a short-term loan from LA Galaxy.
The 29-year-old would be eligible to play in Everton's game against Bolton Wanderers on January 4, with the loan lasting until after the Merseyside derby at Anfield on February 25.
Donovan scored two goals in 10 games in a previous loan spell in 2010 and was a hit with fans of the Merseyside club.
The news is a boost to David Moyes' side who currently lie in the bottom half of the EPL.
"I am delighted that we have managed to get Landon back," Moyes said. "He will give us some good experience over January and February.
"He did well for us when he was over two years ago and hopefully will return with those same qualities."
The midfielder, who scored the winning goal in the MLS Cup final this season, is set to link up with Everton over Christmas so he will be fully fit and ready to play in the New Year.
"The opportunity to return to Everton and play for such a well-respected club and a manager that I hold in such high regard was something that was simply too good to pass up," Donovan told evertonfc.com.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Everton in 2010 and I'm hopeful that we can experience similar success this time around."
