Victory releases defender Sukha

Updated July 13, 2011 12:23:03

Thai international defender Surat Sukha will quit the A-League to play for Bangkok's Buriram PEA after he was released by Melbourne Victory on compassionate grounds.

Sukha made 36 appearances over two seasons in the A-League and played five times in the Victory's most recent AFC Champions League campaign.

Victory coach Mehmet Durakovic said the 28-year-old had made a "tremendous contribution" but found settling in Australia too difficult.

"The massive cultural differences between Thailand and Australia made it difficult for his family to settle here in Melbourne, and as a result we reluctantly agreed to transfer him to Buriram PEA," said Durakovic.

Sukha added: "I enjoyed my time at Melbourne Victory, but it was in the best interests of my family that I return home to Thailand."

A transfer has been negotiated with Buriram PEA with immediate effect.

Japan stuns Germany, joins France in semis

Updated July 10, 2011 11:51:00

Japan knocked defending champion Germany out of the women's World Cup beating the hosts 1-0 after extra-time to advance to its first semi-final with France, which needed a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out to get past England.

Japan's winning goal in Wolfsburg came in the 108th minute when captain Homare Sawa put in a superb long-range pass and substitute Karina Maruyama drilled past Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer.

Despite France dominating for most of its quarter-final game in Leverkusen, Jill Scott put England ahead after 59 minutes before Elise Bussaglia equalised with two minutes to go for a 1-1 score which carried through extra time.

Camille Abily missed France's first penalty but Claire Rafferty and Faye White then failed to net England's last two to send Les Bleus through to a final four showdown with either Brazil or the United States.

Australia takes on Sweden on Sunday evening, with the winner to take on Japan in the semis.

The loss was a double blow for Germany with the Japanese victory ensuring that France will go to next year's Olympics.

"This is what I feared would happen," Germany coach Silvia Neid said.

"We were off colour against the side ranked fourth in the world.

"We weren't able to score goals and we weren't precise enough in our execution.

"You always have to worry about a good counter-attack against the Japanese.

"It is of course very unfortunate and very sad."

Japan coach Norio Sasaki said: "To win against Germany is something really motivates us to give our best for the next match.

"I am very, very proud of my team."

Having won both the 2003 and 2007 editions, this is the first time Germany has lost at a women's World Cup since it was beaten 3-2 by host the USA in the quarter-finals of the 1999 tournament.

Arsenal seals deal for striker Gervinho

Updated July 12, 2011 06:47:00

Arsenal has recruited Lille's 24-year-old Ivory Coast forward Gervinho as it bids to boost its firepower this season and end a trophy drought stretching back to 2005.

"He is an official Arsenal player. Gervinho has joined training today at London Colney (in England)," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told a news conference during the club's preseason trip to Malaysia.

The arrival of Gervinho, who scored 28 goals in 67 games for Ligue 1 champions Lille over the last two seasons, comes amid speculation that top midfielders Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas could leave despite Wenger sounding confident that both would stay put.

Asked whether he expected Fabregas to stay, Wenger said: "Yes. As simple as that.

"I have never spoken about what has happened behind closed doors but Cesc loves the club.

"We know the Barcelona story goes on for years now and we have to close that. Now we focus on the new season, hopefully with Cesc Fabregas.

"There is always speculation when a player has one year to go on his contract that he might leave the club but Samir Nasri is very happy at the club and committed to stay at the club," added the Frenchman.

"I hope he will sign a new contract but I am not the only one to decide that."

British media reported that Gervinho, who generally operated on the right of a front three for last season's surprise French double winners, had cost 12 million pounds.

Gervinho, whose full name is Gervais Yao Kouassi, moved to Belgium League side Beveren when he was 17 before heading to France where he played for Le Mans and then on to Lille two years ago.

He has represented his country at both the Olympics and last year's World Cup.

Forward Niklas Bendtner and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia have both been linked with moves away from Arsenal in the media.

Meanwhile, Arsenal rivals Tottenham Hotspur has signed former teenager Cristian Ceballos from Barcelona.

Tottenham also sold injury-plagued former England defender Jonathan Woodgate to Stoke on a one-year, free transfer deal.

Vic Police tweet Celtic 'eviction score'

Updated July 14, 2011 12:00:39

Football Federation Australia (FFA) says it is disappointed Victoria Police gave a running online commentary on evictions from last night's friendly match between Melbourne Victory and Glasgow Celtic.

Victoria Police used Twitter to update its online followers on how many people had been kicked out of the game.

"Game about to start with one person already evicted. What a waste of money!" one tweet read.

The final tweet read: "Game over, Celtics 1, Police 14."

The FFA's Kyle Patterson told ABC Local Radio it was inappropriate for police to single out the game for attention.

"Last night's football match was the only event to get this attention - there were bigger AFL games played on the weekend which didn't have a similar running commentary," he said.

"I have asked politely for an explanation about that and I've been told that last night's game was considered a major one-off event."

Inspector Mick Beattie from Victoria Police says the tweets should not have been published.

"I was personally unaware the tweets were going out," he said.

"There was a Victoria Police media officer at the event. It's only this morning, as the person in charge of the operation, that I've become aware of what was going out and I am disappointed."

Police sorry after soccer eviction tweets

Updated July 14, 2011 23:12:06

Victoria Police has apologised for giving a running online commentary about evictions from a soccer game played in Melbourne last night.

Police used Twitter to update followers on how many people were being kicked out of the game between Melbourne Victory and Glasgow Celtic at AAMI Park.

One tweet read: 'Game over, Celtic 1, Police 14.'

Football Federation Australia (FFA) spokesman Kyle Patterson says the tweets were inappropriate.

"This is the era of social media where we all need to come to grips with the new norms, the new standards, the new nuances, but I suggest last night the nuances weren't right," he said.

Mr Patterson says the FFA has asked for an explanation.

"It has been received as provocative among football fans - both at the event and those following it," he said.

Inspector Mick Beattie, who directed police operations at the game, says had he known what was happening he would have stopped it.

"If any of this stuff had been run past me it would not have gone out," he said.

"I was advised that it was an attempt to be light and slightly humorous, obviously that has failed."

Fourteen people were ejected from the game out of a crowd of 20,000.

Melbourne Victory has established a working group with Victoria Police to foster a better relationship between soccer fans and police.

Victoria Police has also released a statement about the incident.

"Victoria Police regularly sends tweets in relation to major events including sporting events and significant police operations. Given the significance of last night's soccer match the Media Unit made the decision to send out specific tweets in relation the event," the statement read.

"A number of the tweets included information on the evictions from the ground.

"This is no different from information provided at other sporting events including the Ashes, where we gave information on the number of people who were removed from the MCG.

"At the time we received no feedback that people were unhappy with information being provided about evictions or other crowd behaviour."

The statement said the tweets were not meant to antagonise football fans.

"If people misunderstood our intent then that is regrettable. We certainly did not want to antagonise soccer fans who were generally well-behaved at last night's game," it said.

"This was never about soccer and again, we tweet from any number of high profile events and operations. It's about getting a safety message out."

Riise returns to England with Fulham

Updated July 14, 2011 14:23:16

Fulham has completed the signing of former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise from Italian side Roma for an undisclosed fee, the English Premier League club announced Wednesday.

Riise has signed a three-year contract and his arrival at Craven Cottage will see him linking up with brother Bjorn Helge.

The Norwegian has spent past the three season in the Italian capital after leaving Anfield in 2008.

Riise, a 30-year-old left-back who made more than 230 appearances for Liverpool after joining them from Monaco in 2001, said it was great to be back in England.

"I'm delighted to have completed my transfer to Fulham this morning and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League once again," he told Fulham's official website.

"Fulham is a club that I have been following as my brother, Bjorn, plays here and he speaks very highly of the club and the staff.

"Obviously I also played against the club in the Europa League group stage when they went on to reach the final of the competition.

"I know that the club is ambitious and continues to make good progress each year, under the guidance of the chairman, Mohamed Al Fayed.

"I am looking forward to working with Martin Jol and the rest of the squad when I report to training next week."

Riise is the second signing made by Dutch manager Jol since he arrived at the west London club following Hungarian goalkeeper Csaba Somogyi, who joined earlier this week.

"John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back, who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me," said Jol.

"He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.

"I am extremely happy that we've been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress."

Fulham finished eighth in the Premier League last season.

Wenger willing to lose Nasri for free

Updated July 14, 2011 16:53:54

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he is so keen to keep hold of midfielder Samir Nasri that he is prepared to risk losing the French international for free in a year's time.

Speaking after his team started its preseason Asian tour with a resounding 4-0 win over a Malaysia XI on Wednesday, Wenger praised Nasri and refused to be drawn on the future of want-away captain Cesc Fabregas.

Spanish midfielder Fabregas has been the subject of a bid from his boyhood team Barcelona, while French international Nasri has been strongly linked with Manchester City and Manchester United.

Wenger said he was delighted to see Nasri, who has 12 months to run on his contract, turn on the style in Malaysia and help the Gunners to a convincing victory.

"Samir (Nasri) has always been committed to the team and we saw that today," the coach said.

"He did very well coming off the bench. I'm willing to keep him for another year, even if it means we risk losing him for nothing in a year's time.

"I think the board agrees with me as it is a technical decision.

"Our goal is to win the championship and we need good players to do that."

Asked about Fabregas, the French boss responded: "I don't want to comment on what some Barcelona players are saying, about how Fabregas wants to leave, but all I can say is, we want to keep him."

Arsenal plays in China on Saturday before flying back to Europe.

Fabregas, 24, has stayed behind in London as he recovers from a muscle strain.

Wenger has insisted Arsenal, which finished fourth this year and was again without a trophy, would be contenders next season despite failing to splash the cash so far.

Schwarzer wants fresh Fulham success

Updated July 13, 2011 09:03:32

Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has said Fulham cannot afford to stand still but must build on its impressive achievements of recent seasons if they are to enjoy future success.

Although one of London's smaller top-flight clubs, in terms of ground capacity and tradition, Fulham have twice finished in the Premier League top 10 over the past three seasons and also made it to the Europa League final in 2010.

Schwarzer has been a cornerstone of the Cottagers' team in that time.

"We've just got to keep backing up what we've been doing over the last few years," he told Fulham's website on Tuesday.

"The last three seasons have been -- for Fulham Football Club and a lot of us personally - fantastic.

"It's possibly been the best three years in a lot of our careers. We need to continue that run.

"We believe that we belong in the top half of the Premier League and we like to think that we can mix it in Europe every couple of seasons.

"The expectation levels are always higher. When I first came here, the club had just avoided relegation with 15 minutes to spare so anything above that was a bonus.

"To then finish seventh, then have such a great run in Europe and finish eighth last year means the expectations are there.

"We, as players, acknowledge that and we know that we need to live up to them.

"So far it's been a great challenge. If you look at the history of the club and how much has been accomplished, particularly in the last three years - it's been outstanding."

Schwarzer also praised the contribution of Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of London's Harrods department store.

"The chairman's been 100 per cent supportive and the club wouldn't exist in the position it is now without the support of the chairman," he added.

"He's always been there and he's always been rock-solid for the club. He's always looked to progress.

"In the years that I've been here, I've seen a lot of progression."

Matildas bow out of World Cup

Updated July 11, 2011 06:32:00

Slack defending proved Australia's downfall as it crashed 3-1 to Sweden in the women's World Cup football quarter-final in Augsburg, Germany on Sunday.

The four goals Australia conceded in its three group games had all been the result of defensive lapses but, sadly, the exuberant young Australians did not learn their lessons.

They conceded two goals in the first 16 minutes against the Swedes, with the scorer of each unmarked inside the Australian penalty area.

A spectacular curling 40th minute shot from dual international Ellyse Perry halved the deficit.

The Matildas started the second half well, but gave themselves a mountain to climb by committing a defensive howler in the 52nd minute.

Sweden striker Lotta Schelin pounced on a loose back pass from centre half Kim Carroll, pushed the ball around Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri and tapped it into an unguarded net.

Sweden will now take on Japan in the semi-finals with the Unites States also booking a spot in the last four against France following a dramatic win over Brazil on penalties after the two sides finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra time.

In Ausburg, the gallant Matildas refused to crumble after going down 3-1 and mounted several attacks and created a number of chances.

Kyah Simon headed just wide, fellow striker Lisa De Vanna also went close and substitute Tameka Butt had a header and shot on target.

Sweden also went in search of more goals in the final half hour, but the Australian defence held.

Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said he was proud of the way his team played during spells of the game, particularly during the second half and the last part of the first.

He thought Sweden looked shaky at 2-1, but said Australia would find it hard to win games until it eliminated mistakes.

"At halfime at 2-1 we felt really comfortable and well in the game," Sermanni told SBS.

"I think we were until we made another mistake and you can't make mistakes at this level.

"When you consider the goals we've given up in this tournament and the way that they've done that, I think we've done extremely well to get where we've got to.

"But you can't be a winning team and defend well for 90 per cent of the time and give opposition easy goals."

Sermanni made two changes to his team, bringing in Perry and Emily Van Egmond for Clare Polkinghorne and Samantha Kerr.

It was a chequered night for Australian World Cup cricket representative and Matildas' right back Perry, who was beaten down her side in the lead-up to both of Sweden's first two goals.

In the first instance, Therese Sjogran had time to control the cross and fire in a shot which Barbieri got a hand to but could not stop at her near post.

Eight minutes later, Lisa Dahlkvist rose unchallenged to head home from close range.

Australia struggled to get a foothold for around 20 minutes after Sweden went 2-0 up, but the Europeans did not create any other meaningful chances.

The Matildas gradually clawed their way back into the match in the last 10 minutes of the half.

Midfielder Collette McCallum threatened from set pieces.

Her 40 metre free kick in the 38th minute almost caught out the Swedish goalkeeper, who watched the audacious attempt just miss the target.

McCallum's short corner to Perry produced the goal that gave Australia hope.

The multi-talented youngster controlled the ball with her right boot and curled the ball in from the extreme right-hand edge of the area with her non-preferred left foot.

"I think I was just in the right place at the right time," Perry said about her goal.

"It was nice to get a goal there because they obviously scored those first two goals from plays down my side of the field, so I kind of felt like I owed the team a little bit.

"It was lovely to put one in the back of the net, especially being a defender it doesn't happen too often," added Perry, who scored her third goal in 16 internationals.

Perry and Van Egmond, were replaced by Butt and Polkinghorne just before the hour, while McCallum gave way Sally Shipard with just over 10 minutes left.

US reaches women's World Cup final

Updated July 14, 2011 12:29:35

Favourites the United States crushed France 3-1 to advance to the women's World Cup final in Germany overnight.

Lauren Cheney (9), Abby Wambach (79), and Alex Morgan (82) kept the Americans' bid for an unprecedented third World Cup title after 1991 and 1999 on track with Sonia Bompastor getting a goal back for France after 55 minutes.

The reigning Olympic champions will next play Japan for the title in Frankfurt, after the Asian dynamo saw off Sweden by an identical 3-1 scoreline.

"I think France played very well. We lost our legs in the second half but then we picked it up," said US coach Pia Sundhage.

"Abby, she's just the best. I'm very happy to have her in our team."

Wambach added: "I'm just so proud of this team. Everyone believes in this team and we're all working for each other. We had to play nearly perfect, they got a goal back on us but in the end we're in the finals and that's all that matters."

France coach Bruno Bini lamented their missed chances.

"We had a lot of chances and played a very good game except the first 10 minutes," said Bini.

"We were as good as we could have been. It was very physical and we stood up to this. But they have a lot of experience. They know how to play at this level and that told today. I thought we could get back to 2-2 but at 3-1 it's over."

Despite the French having most chances at goal in the first half it was the United States who went into the locker room with the half-time advantage after Cheney picked up a Heather O'Reilly cross to tap effortlessly into goal after nine minutes.

France's Louisa Necib had a minute earlier seen her strike go over the bar.

A header from Carli Lloyd went over after 24 minutes, but thereafter France dominated but had little to show for its efforts.

Camille Abily missed a chance to level on 28 minutes from a Bompastor cross but the Lyon midfielder's half volley lacked power and was held by US goalie Hope Solo.

Solo, playing her 100th international, proved solid again a minute later as she caught a Necib effort, and it was then the turn of Bompastor to miss after 33 minutes when she picked up a Necib cross but her left-footed shot rattled the crossbar.

The US could have pulled further ahead five minutes before the break when Christie Rampone pushed forward to cross to Wambach at the far post with Wambach's header across the goal just grazing the crossbar.

But Bompastor grabbed the equaliser after 55 minutes as her pass flew past a waiting Gaetane Thiney in the box to curl in off the far post and into the net.

But Wambach claimed the second after 79 minutes as she headed in a Cheney corner past Berangere Sapowicz, with the French goalkeeper left helpless again three minutes later as Rapinoe plays a little ball behind the defence for Morgan to send over the goalie.

As two-time defending champions Germany and Brazil, the 2007 finalists, have already been eliminated the United States were the only remaining pre-tournament favourites in the running.

As well as being ranked number one in the world by FIFA the United States are also the reigning and three-time Olympic champions.

France, by contrast, failed to get past the group stages in its only previous appearance in 2003.

Celtic beats Glory in friendly

Posted July 9, 2011 23:07:00

Celtic made amends for last week's 1-0 loss to Central Coast with a convincing 2-0 triumph over a new-look Perth Glory at Subiaco on Saturday night.

The Glory, featuring six new players in their starting XI, struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the night despite the industrious work of New Zealand's Shane Smeltz, who was subbed off at half-time.

Goals to Gary Hooper and defender Charlie Mulgrew either side of the break sealed the win for Celtic, which rounds out its Australian preseason tour with a match against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Wednesday.

Greece international Georgios Samaras failed to take part in the match but is set to feature against the Victory.

Both sides made a cautious start to the contest, with players perhaps wary of their footing on a shabby-looking pitch that required a mountain of work during the week to get rid of the excess water.

Perth skipper Jacob Burns made his presence felt throughout the contest, unleashing a series of crunching tackles in the first half to get under the skin of several Celtic players.

A reflex fingertip save by new Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic denied Kelvin Wilson's smart header in the 10th minute, but a split-second of hesitation from Perth defender Bas van den Brink was all Hooper needed to open the scoring six minutes later.

Van den Brink paused when Glenn Loovens' long ball headed towards Anthony Stokes, who was offside.

But Stokes took himself out of the play, allowing Hooper to pounce on the bouncing ball before drilling it low and to the left of Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.

Impressive Celtic playmaker Kris Commons almost made it a second when his free kick flicked Scott Neville's head and drifted just wide of the target.

The Glory should have tied the game up in the 25th minute when Liam Miller's deft chip from a close-range free kick allowed Shane Smeltz to sneak in behind Celtic's defence.

But with just the 'keeper to beat, Smeltz failed to connect with his left-foot volley.

Burns' uncompromising approach started to ruffle a few feathers, but it was fellow midfielder Adam Hughes who ended up doing some physical damage, with his swinging elbow while competing for a header resulting in a bloodied nose to Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal.

Kayal received treatment for five minutes on the field before being reluctantly substituted.

The Israeli was clearly frustrated as he came off, kicking away a sound-effects microphone after a consoling hug from manager Neil Lennon failed to calm him down.

Celtic doubled the lead in the 51st minute, with Mulgrew rising high to head home Ki Sung Yueng's curling free kick.

History of Broken Hill - episode 21 - The Billy's Club

Brian Tonkin is the Archives Officer with the Broken Hill City Library and he took the listeners of 999 ABC on a tour of The Billy Club and talked about why this organisation meant so much to the people of the Silver City.

Officially known as the Alma Sporting Club, but always referred to as the Billy's Club, the organisation was established in the mid 1930's.

Sitting across the street from Gladstone Park on Boughtman Street, The Billy's Club played host to countless post match celebrations and weekend drinking sessions.

Edmund Thomas Lamb was the Secretary of the Gladstone Park Management Committee and spent more than 20 years as the president of the Billy's Sporting Club before passing away in the 1950's.

To honour Edmund's tireless work promoting and supporting football of all codes in South Broken Hill, Gladstone Park was rename the E.T. Lamb Memorial Oval.

Lamb himself would be pleased to know that people young and old still use the oval to play football to this very day.

The impressive Billy's Clubhouse was built in 1957 and thrived with high membership throughout the 60's and 70's.

Brown, O'Shea leave United for Sunderland

Posted July 8, 2011 08:52:00

Sunderland has completed a double swoop of Manchester United defenders, bringing Wes Brown and John O'Shea to the club on four-year contracts.

Brown, 31, and 30-year-old O'Shea joined for undisclosed fees, after United last month accepted an offer of around 12 million pounds for the pair and midfielder Darron Gibson, O'Shea's Ireland international team-mate.

Brown, who can play at centre-back or right-back, made his United debut in the club's 1998-99 treble-winning season and went on to make 361 appearances.

"We are delighted to welcome a player of Wes' ability, experience and character to the club," said Sunderland coach Steve Bruce, himself a former United centre-back.

"He has been a fantastic professional for Manchester United through the years and not only will he strengthen our defensive options, he will also bring with him a winning mentality and level of maturity which can only be positive for the players around him."

Brown won two Champions League titles, five Premier League winners' medals, two FA Cups and two League Cups with United and has been capped 23 times by England.

"Last season I was fine, I just didn't get into the team so it was a little bit frustrating. But that's football and you move on," said Brown, who has endured an injury-riddled career.

"I am just delighted to be here now to help Sunderland push forward.

"Personally, it would be good to be playing every week, trying to help the team win and playing well."

O'Shea accumulated one Champions League title, five league successes, one FA Cup winners' medal and three League Cups during a 12-year Old Trafford tenure that saw him make almost 400 appearances.

"Once I'd heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about, it was the only place I was going to come to," said O'Shea, who can also play as a holding midfielder.

The pair follow in the footsteps of Connor Wickham, Craig Gardner, Ji Dong-Won and free signings Keiren Westwood and Sebastian Larsson, who have all signed for Sunderland since the end of last season.

Host Germany into women's Cup quarters

Posted July 6, 2011 09:17:00

Host Germany will join England, Japan and France in the quarter-finals at the women's World Cup following a 4-2 win over the French, who had the first player sent off in the tournament.

France goalkeeper Berangere Sapowicz was given her marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Germany's Fatmire Bajramaj midway through the second half in Moenchengladbach as the Germans picked up their third straight win.

Goals from Kerstin Garefrekes, an Inka Grings double, and a last-gasp Celia Okoyino da Mbabi effort saw Germany win the tournament's highest-scoring match with Marie-Laure Delie and Laura Georges getting two back for France.

But both coaches were furious with Finnish referee Kirsi Heikkinen, who handed our five yellow cards in addition to Sapowicz's red.

"I think it was overdone," Germany coach Silvia Neid said.

"Bruno Bini (France coach) got really worked up because he got three yellow and one red. You didn't dare to do anything after that. I think it was too much."

The Germans, who are bidding for their third straight World Cup title, will now play Japan in Wolfsburg in their quarter-final after their 2-0 defeat to England in Group B.

As Group A runner-up, France plays Group B winner England on Saturday in Leverkusen in their quarter-final.

England's Ellen White gave the Three Lions a great start against Japan in Augsburg with a goal in the 15th minute before Rachel Yankey sealed victory on 66 minutes.

In the day's other matches, New Zealand earned a dramatic 2-2 draw with Mexico in Sinsheim after the equaliser came with the last kick of the Group B game as both teams took their bow.

Mexico led 2-0 after 30 minutes thanks to Stephany Mayor and Maribel Dominguez, but the Kiwis hit back as captain Rebecca Smith scored with time almost up.

Teenager Hannah Wilkinson levelled in the 94th minute.

And Nigeria also signed off its campaign with a win after beating Canada 1-0 in Group A in Dresden.

Nigeria reacted fastest following a 10-minute-long power-cut towards the end of the second half as midfielder Perpetua Nkwocha scored the winner in the 84th minute when the lights went back on.

Canada was also eliminated from the tournament.

Australia's Matildas continue World Cup run

Last Updated: Thu, 7 Jul 2011 12:40:00 +1000

Australia is through to the quarter-finals of the women's soccer World Cup in Germany after beating Norway 2-1 in their final pool match.

The Matildas looked to be in trouble when Norway opened the scoring in the 56th minute.

Sydney FC forward Kyah Simon then scored a double to seal the win for Australia.

"We've worked so hard to get to where we are today," she said.

"All the preparation is paying off, but the job isn't finished yet. We've still got a few games to get to that end result, but we're just happy to be into the quarter finals."

Australia's opponent in the round of eight will be Sweden, which beat the United States two-one this morning to finish on top of Group C.

Glory boss says pitch poses no risk

Posted July 7, 2011 17:12:00

Perth Glory chief executive Paul Kelly is adamant the water-logged surface at Perth Oval will not compromise the welfare of Celtic players in Saturday night's soccer friendly.

Last month's heavy rain in Perth turned the stadium into a quagmire, with ground staff working around the clock to get the surface up to an adequate standard in time for Saturday's match.

So dire was the situation, helicopters were hired by the venue on Wednesday to hover just above the surface to try to dry up the excess water.

There were thoughts the match might have to be shifted to either the WACA Ground or AFL venue Subiaco Oval.

But Kelly confirmed on Thursday the match will go ahead at Perth Oval, saying the situation has improved and players will not be at an increased risk of injury.

"I'm very confident there won't be any risk to the players," he said.

"There's pumping equipment which I believe has been pumping thousands of litres of water out of the ground.

"It's not so much the top (that's the problem). It's what's under the ground.

"And that's why the pipes have gone in to extract the water out.

"It's soft under foot, but I have every faith that today and tomorrow, it will harden up.

"Celtic have had a look at it.

"I spoke to (Celtic manager) Neil Lennon about it last night as well and they've played on pitches that, I won't say they're far worse, but they're soft and wet.

"They've said they've probably played on worse pitches given it rains a bit in Scotland.

"They had a couple of games called off last year because of this."

Perth coach Ian Ferguson said he is comfortable with his players competing on the pitch, despite its inconsistencies.

"It's one of those things. In Australia, it's 90 per cent sunshine but, unfortunately, it's been raining here over the past few months," he said.

"We've just got to deal with it. There's no use making a big thing of it."

Glory officials are hopeful of attracting more than 15,000 people to the match.

Celtic suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Central Coast in Sydney on Saturday, but will be boosted by the returns of Greek international Georgios Samaras, Swedish defender Daniel Majstorovic and Korean duo Cha Du-Ri and Ki Sung Yueng.

Adelaide brings Vidosic home

Updated July 6, 2011 17:36:00

Adelaide United has pulled off a quiet, quality and important coup in signing Socceroo Dario Vidosic to a three-year A-League deal.

Vidosic returns to Australia in the prime of his career at 24, among national team coach Holger Osieck's first-choice squad, and clear proof players now believe they are not at a Socceroos selection disadvantage by playing at home.

A 2010 World Cup squad member, capped 14 times for his country, Vidosic has been signed as the Reds' Australian marquee player.

While current Socceroos have had a mixed bag on return to the A-League, Vidosic is confident he can deal with any pressure.

"You carry the pressure, but it's a nice pressure to have," Vidosic said from Adelaide.

"I want to put that pressure on myself to maintain being a Socceroo, but I think that can only benefit me, playing here and playing well."

Vidosic starred in a handful of games for the then-Queensland Roar before moving three years ago to Germany.

But his international career blossomed amid misery in Germany at club level.

He was unable to make a mark at three German clubs - injuries and a series of loans unsettling him and leading to his return to choose an attack-minded club under Dutch coach Rini Coolen.

"The biggest motivation for me was just happiness - to enjoy my football again," Vidosic said.

"I was being used wrong and I was starting not to enjoy it as much as I'd like to.

"I'm a pretty simple footballer. I like the ball at my feet and I missed that."

For the Reds, it is a huge boost after selling last season's A-League player of the year Marcos Flores to China last week and losing experienced Travis Dodd, Robbie Cornthwaite, Iain Fyfe and Lucas Pantelis.

"Dario fits exactly in our system. He can play on the left side, the right side, behind the striker," Coolen said.

"Filling your squad with players like Dario, it's fantastic for the league and for our club."

Vidosic believes the move home will prove no hindrance to his Socceroos ambitions.

And Vidosic, whose father Rado is an assistant coach with the all-conquering Brisbane Roar, has earmarked silverware as a key motivator in choosing the Reds over other offers.

"We've set the ambitions - we want to set them high. If you look over the years how Adelaide have done, they have done well in the A-League and Asian Champions League," he said.

Matildas reach Cup quarter-finals

Updated July 7, 2011 07:06:00

A Kyah Simon double fired Australia into the quarter-finals of the women's World Cup with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Norway in their final Group D game.

Elise Thorsnes opened the scoring for 1995 winner Norway after 56 minutes but a minute later Simon grabbed the equaliser.

The 20-year-old Sydney FC forward then sealed victory with a header three minutes from time.

"There was a lot of courage and commitment shown out there," said Australia coach Tom Sermanni, whose side had needed a draw to advance to the last eight for the second consecutive World Cup.

"I was very deflated when they scored the first goal, but it was critical that we scored straight afterwards.

"We knew it would be difficult. Norway have a really robust style of play, but we rearranged the formation (after half-time) to give us a bit more balance and the game opened up a bit."

Simon added: "It was great to get two in the one game. It's been a long time coming and it's great for my confidence.

"Going into such a crucial game, we knew we needed a draw or a win. We wanted a win. The girls fought hard and when it was one-all, we knew we needed that extra goal."

The Matildas go through to the last eight with already-qualified Brazil from Group D and they next play Sweden, which beat the United States 2-1 in Wolfsburg to finish top of Group C for a place in the semi-final.

Former heavyweight Norway has failed to get to the quarter-finals for the first time after suffering its first loss to Asian champion Australia in five meetings.

"It all went wrong. The disappointment is incredible. We really had hoped we could make it much further than we have," coach Eli Landsem said.

"But we'll be back."

Back in the line-up

Simon was back in the Australian line-up after being rested against Equatorial Guinea, along with 16-year-old striker Caitlin Foord and goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri.

Clare Polkinghorne got her first full start with Emily Van Egmond starting on the bench after playing the first two games.

Both sides failed to make an impact in a lacklustre first half, with Norwegian striker Cecilie Pedersen's first effort on 15 minutes going over the bar.

Thorsnes pushed forward with two efforts on 33 and 37 minutes that were both held by Barbieri.

Lisa De Vanna had Australia's best shot of the first half on 40 minutes but Ingrid Hjelmseth held firm in the Norwegian goal.

The breakthrough came after 56 minutes when an error in the Australian defence resulted in Barbieri rushing out to retrieve the ball, only for Thorsnes to race forward and slam into an unguarded goal.

Not to be outdone, the Matildas hit back straight away, racing towards the Norwegian goal with De Vanna crossing to Simon, who coolly tapped into the net for the equaliser.

Simon missed the chance for a double after 70 minutes when she hit just wide, while a Trine Ronning header for Norway hit the netting six minutes later.

A free-kick from defender Ronning six minutes from time came dangerously close but bounced off the post.

But Simon put the result beyond doubt three minutes from time when she picked up another cross to head into the goal.

The result was a double blow for the Norwegians, the 2000 Olympic champions, who not only miss the quarter-finals for the first time but are now out of the running for the 2012 London Games.

The Brazilians meanwhile topped the group with a convincing 3-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final match against the US in Dresden.

Erika struck in the 49th minute and Cristiane doubled the advantage at the 54-minute mark before completing a brace with a penalty in injury time.

Brazil finished Group D with a perfect nine points and a goal difference of 7-0 as it booked its place in the quarter-finals in ominous fashion.

In the day's other Group C encounter, North Korea was held to a goalless draw by debutant Colombia.

The 31st-ranked South Americans achieved their first World Cup points in a tie where nothing was at stake but pride for the already eliminated sides, who were playing each other for the first time.

Bouzanis tipped to join Victory

Posted July 7, 2011 21:45:00

Olyroos goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis is expected to be confirmed soon as a Melbourne Victory A-League signing.

Bouzanis, who spent his teenage years with English Premier League side Liverpool without ever playing a first-team game, has said he has agreed terms with the Victory.

The club has not yet confirmed his signing, but it is expected to do so soon.

"I can now confirm that I have agreed terms with Melbourne Victory FC. Looking forward to the new season with my new club," Bouzanis said on Twitter.

The 20-year-old has played for Australia at under-17, Young Socceroos and Olyroos level and is earmarked for next year's London Olympics if the under-23s qualify.

Should his signing be completed, Bouzanis will battle with Tando Velaphi for the Victory's first-team role after the retirement of Michael Petkovic in the off-season.

City swoops for Montenegrin defender

Posted July 6, 2011 23:20:00

Manchester City completed the transfer of defender Stefan Savic from Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday, signing the Montenegrin on a four-year contract.

Savic, 20, joined City after immigration paperwork was approved by the British Home Office and is the club's second signing this week following the acquisition of Arsenal defender Gael Clichy on Monday.

Savic had previously been on trial with Arsenal but heads to Eastlands after Gunners manager Arsene Wenger passed on the opportunity to sign him.

City boss Roberto Mancini has pinpointed the club's defence as a key area for strengthening as his side attempts to build on last season, where they won the FA Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

Savic said he believed his transition would be made easier because of the presence of Serbia's Aleksandar Kolarov and Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko at City.

"It is a dream come true and I am especially looking forward to meeting Edin and Aleksandar because they both speak my language and come from the Balkans, too," he said.

"Aleks has already phoned me to welcome to City which makes me feel at home already.

"I watch the Premier League all the time. I know it's the place to be so I am just looking forward to helping this club achieve great things.

"We have an incredible stadium and I've seen how passionate the City fans are many times on TV.

"I am just really happy to be a City player."

Football fans not getting the full story

Les Murray Print

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Broadcast: 07/07/2011

Reporter: Kerri Ritchie

Staff within the SBS sports department allege they have been under pressure to write stories in favour of Australia's World Cup bids.

LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: SBS has long prided itself on being the home of soccer coverage in this country.

But 7.30 has spoken to people within the sports department at SBS who claim that football fans aren't getting the full story.

Journalists and columnists allege they've been under pressure to write pieces supporting Australia's World Cup bids. They say some of the pressure has been coming from veteran broadcaster Les Murray, the editorial supervisor at SBS Sport and a member of FIFA's ethics committee.

Kerri Ritchie reports.

DAVIDDE CORRAN, SPORTS WRITER: A lot of people have been afraid to talk about this.

KERRI RITCHIE, REPORTER: The slogan at SBS might be "Six billion stories and counting," but according to a number of current and former SBS staff who spoke on and off the record to 7:30, it seems when it comes to soccer, there are certain stories SBS would prefer not to have to tell.

CHRIS TANNER, PLAYERS' AGENT: Many of us in the game now feel that SBS doesn't seem to be as balanced in its approach to covering of football these days.

JESSE FINK, SPORTS WRITER: Things started to change for me when I began writing pieces that were critical of the Australian World Cup bid and the Australian World Cup bid strategy.

KERRI RITCHIE: Jessie Fink has worked for SBS Sport for four years. He's described on the company's website as one of Australia's most popular football writers. But Mr Fink's contract with SBS, which expired last week, isn't being renewed. Jesse Fink says he hasn't felt able to write freely.

In 2008, some SBS staff received this email from Les Murray, the editorial supervisor at SBS Sport and host of the broadcaster's soccer program, The World Game. Les Murray was writing about negative comments which had been widely reported concerning Australia's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

LES MURRAY, HOST, THE WORLD GAME (male voiceover, email): "It is not a good look if we, SBS, the most powerful voice in football appear to talk down the bid or declare it stillborn. Given that the bid has great support in Australia, including enthusiastic support by all governments, my preferred editorial policy would be to support it."

JESSE FINK: Well to be honest, I was appalled.

KERRI RITCHIE: Les Murray went on to write in the same email:

LES MURRAY (male voiceover, email): "This is not to say we shouldn't broadcast the facts or that we shouldn't give it balanced debate."

KERRI RITCHIE: We now know Australia pulled out of the contest for 2018 and spectacularly lost its bid for 2022 at a cost of around $46 million to Australian taxpayers.

JESSE FINK: SBS has been using its own taxpayer money to suppress criticism of the bid. If we had had the full story, we might not have had the widespread public support that there was for the Australian World Cup bid.

SBS STATEMENT (female voiceover): "SBS refutes the suggestion that Les Murray instructed SBS staff to have no regard for impartiality in relation to the Australian bid to host the World Cup, nor did he instruct staff to report negatively on other nation's bids."

KERRI RITCHIE: Les Murray would not be interviewed by 7.30, but he strongly denies any impropriety.

Jesse Fink says Les Murray, who's also a member of the FIFA ethics committee, suggested to him that he write a piece on the United States bid.

JESSE FINK: I received an email from Les Murray telling me that he couldn't write a story himself, being a member of FIFA's ethics committee, but, "... you may want to respond to this Gulati clown in a blog." And Sunil Gulati was the president of the US Soccer Federation. And I humoured Murray, but I never wrote the column.

SBS STATEMENT (female voiceover): "SBS refutes the suggestion that Les Murray's position on the FIFA ethics committee conflicts with his position as SBS's editorial supervisor, Sport. Mr Fink, during his time with SBS, has expressed a range of views on matters relating to FIFA, the FFA and football generally, none of which were curtailed at the direction of Les Murray."

KERRI RITCHIE: The ABC acknowledges stories written by Mr Fink, Mr Murray and others and published by SBS which are critical of the FFA and FIFA.

Davidde Corran works as a freelancer at SBS. He's been there for five years covering soccer for The World Games program and for SBS News. Davidde Corran says he felt under pressure not to criticise Australia's World Cup bid.

DAVIDDE CORRAN: The issues I have personally had trouble with have all related to essentially the World Cup bid, Australia's World Cup bid for the 2022 World Cup and before that the 2018 World Cup. In particular, the issues - the trouble I've ran into is when covering what other consultants, Football Federation Australia, hired, Peter Hargitay.

KERRI RITCHIE: Les Murray has acknowledged on the record he's friends with European lobbyist Peter Hargitay.

Davidde Corran says when he wrote a piece for the online blog site The Roar questioning why SBS Sport had done a positive profile piece on Mr Hargitay, when others were criticising his employment by FFA, he received a scathing email from Les Murray accusing him of publicly discrediting SBS.

DAVIDDE CORRAN: It was interesting because one thing that was said to me was, "Well, if you have these things to say, we want to keep them in house, you do them through SBS."

ANDREW JENNINGS, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: What would concern me if I was an Australian taxpayer would be the friendship between Peter Hargitay and Les Murray. ... Les Murray propped him up.

KERRI RITCHIE: Football agent Chris Tanner suggests there may be good reasons why Les Murray doesn't want Peter Hargitay discussed.

CHRIS TANNER: Les Murray openly admitted that he introduced Hargitay to Frank Lowy and FFA, and with the controversy around that appointment of Hargitay and other consultants, maybe that's an area they don't want to touch.

KERRI RITCHIE: He says SBS has a lot at stake.

CHRIS TANNER: It's possibly looking to rebuild a relationship with Football Federation Australia, possibly with A League rights coming up down the track, and certainly as far as FIFA's concerned, one could only presume that Les Murray's role at FIFA and Les Murray's role at SBS creates some form of positive relationship between the two.

KERRI RITCHIE: In 2009, Les Murray sent out another directive to some staff, while warning them to take care using a particular source who'd been criticising FIFA committee member Mohammed Bin Hammam.

LES MURRAY (male voiceover, email): "Another thing to consider is that, as commercial partners to FIFA, we are not as an organisation permitted to 'defame' FIFA officials."

KERRI RITCHIE: Last month, following a scandal over bribery allegations, Mohammed Bin Hammam withdrew his bid for the FIFA presidency, leaving one candidate, the incumbent Sepp Blatter, to be elected.

UK-based investigative journalist Andrew Jennings is well-known for his reports on alleged corruption within FIFA and before that the International Olympic Committee.

ANDREW JENNINGS: I think Les Murray's directive to the SBS staff smacks of North Korea. It smacks of the Stalin world where journalists were told what they could and couldn't report. What is so bad is that it's taxpayer-funded.

KERRI RITCHIE: Despite the allegations of corruption dogging FIFA, Jesse Fink says he's received numerous emails from SBS managers telling him to stop covering the politics of football because readers are tired of it. Jesse Fink says the final straw was when a piece he wrote about the FFA was sent by his editors to the FFA for fact-checking before it was published.

JESSE FINK: I was utterly flabbergasted by it. I've never heard of anything like it. For me, that said it everything about the lack of independence at SBS.

SBS STATEMENT (female voiceover): "This blog was sent to FFA for fact-checking, not for approval. It is not normal practice for SBS to ask the FFA to approve any editorial."

KERRI RITCHIE: Jesse Fink expects speaking out now will have consequences.

LEIGH SALES: And SBS says it has clear editorial codes and guidelines covering potential conflicts of interest and it says in relation to Les Murray's position with FIFA, those guidelines have been followed.

Kerrie Ritchie reporting.

Argentine giants River Plate relegated

Posted June 27, 2011 07:00:00

River Plate, the record 33 times Argentine league champions, suffered its biggest humiliation ever with relegation to the second division for the first time on Monday morning.

River drew 1-1 with Belgrano of the Nacional B division in the second leg of a relegation-promotion playoff at the Monumental after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Cordoba on Wednesday.

Fans in the 60,000 plus crowd at the Monumental went wild with rage, throwing objects on to the pitch and some tried to climb over perimeter fencing to storm on to the field.

Players of both sides had to leave the pitch under protection of stewards while police used high power hoses to try to subdue the rioting fans.

River raised their hopes soon after kickoff, going ahead in the sixth minute when striker Mariano Pavone controlled on the edge of the box, swivelled and shot low into the corner past diving keeper Juan Carlos Olave.

Midfielder Guillermo Farre stunned the 60,000 plus Monumental crowd when he equalised just past the hour, blasting the loose ball past stranded 'keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo after a blunder in the River defence.

River were awarded a penalty midway through the second half which Pavone shot to Olave's right but the goalkeeper saved, leaving River still needing two goals to save their top flight status. The referee did not add stoppage time as the rioting had already started.

A tie on aggregate would have saved River from relegation.

Hearfield wants more after stunning Celtic

Posted July 3, 2011 13:49:00

Central Coast recruit Troy Hearfield is looking for lots more goals after his stunner on debut delivered the Mariners an upset 1-0 victory over Scottish soccer titan Celtic at the Olympic stadium on Saturday.

Hearfield's unstoppable curler from the edge of the area inside the last five minutes proved the difference in a tight contest.

The second-half substitute only arrived at the club a few days earlier following a stint with Indonesian side Pelita Jaya.

After being used primarily as a defender in Indonesia and at his previous A-League club Wellington, Hearfield is looking forward to a more attacking role with the Mariners.

"I've been signed to the club to be a goalscorer and get back to goalscoring," he said.

"I've been at the back for a long time at Wellington and it's just good to get forward and get back shooting.

"I was in camps with the Olyroos with (Mariners coach) Graham Arnold and he knows what I can do, he's seen me play when I was younger.

"He signed me to the club to be explosive and to run at players and get back to my natural game which is going forward."

Arnold was very aware of Hearfield's attacking prowess.

"I've got a very high opinion of Troy, more in the attacking half than in the defensive half, where he has played with Wellington," he said.

The chance to use recruits Hearfield, Adriano Pellegrino and Brad McDonald was a positive for Arnold, who admitted with 13 weeks to go to the A-league kick-off, he could not really take anything out of Saturday's game.

He was delighted with the performances of versatile Rostyn Griffiths in the unfamiliar role of centre back and fellow central defender Patrick Zwaanswijk, who was also complimented by Celtic coach Neil Lennon.

Left back Josh Rose was the home player who received the warmest praise from Lennon.

"I thought he got forward very very well, and (was) very athletic and very good on the ball," Lennon said of Rose.

The full-back revealed he was determined to show he was more than a one-season wonder following an outstanding 2010-11 campaign.

"One of the things I wanted to do was back it up again this year, prove to people out there that it wasn't just a one-off and I've been working pretty hard during the preseason," Rose said.

Lennon said he would have liked to watch injured Mariners midfield ace Mustafa Amini play, although the highly rated youngster still made an impression on the visiting coach.

"It's a hell of a hairstyle he's got," joked Lennon.

Mariners midfielder John Hutchinson has joined their sister club, Chinese Super League team Chengdu Blades, on loan until October 30.

Victory remain bullish on Kewell

Updated July 4, 2011 17:01:00

Melbourne Victory say they remain confident of signing Harry Kewell despite the Socceroo's agent ruling out a move to the A-League.

Kewell's manager Bernie Mandic says the 32-year-old is weighing up offers outside Australia after negotiations for him to play in the A-League fell through.

That is because of a disagreement with Football Federation Australia (FFA) over a top-up to what he would earn from any club deal.

Mandic says Kewell had agreed terms in principle with both Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC and had been close to making a decision on which of the two clubs he would play for.

But the FFA's rejection of a separate deal involving a 30-70 split of additional gate revenue from away matches that Kewell played led to Mandic saying his client will not play in the A-League next season.

Victory chief executive Richard Wilson muddied the water further on Monday, saying the club believed it remained in the running to secure Kewell's services.

It has agreed to a complex revenue-sharing arrangement with Kewell as his payment for playing at the club.

"Melbourne Victory remains extremely interested in securing the services of Harry Kewell," Wilson said.

"We are very hopeful that Harry will be playing for Melbourne Victory ... it's very much in Bernie's hands.

"We've put a very strong proposal to Harry ... our negotiations with Bernie are very separate [to the FFA].

"Bernie is there to act in the interests of his player. We respect that, and we have no problem with that."

Mandic says unless the FFA agrees to a deal involving a share of away gate revenue, the deal will not go ahead.

But he says Kewell was still "happy to play in the A-League" and suggests the ball is now in the FFA's court.

"Harry is happy to play in the A-League but he will not be doing it for any financial guarantees, whether from the FFA or anybody else," Mandic told Melbourne radio station SEN.

"The way things stand, unless the position of the FFA changes ... then no, nothing will change.

"Unless the 30-70 deal can be done with the FFA, that's the only way it can happen."

The FFA released a statement in response to Mandic's comments, saying it stood by its offer to pay Kewell to market and promote the sport.

It did not address the concept of an away gate split.

"We are satisfied the offer of support by way of a marketing services agreement would be a responsible and prudent way to lift the profile and marketability of the A-League and complement any contract Harry may sign with an individual club," the statement said.

"The fact remains that Harry Kewell would be a fabulous acquisition for any A-League club and would be a great boost for the competition."

Kewell is now back in Europe after holidaying with his family and weighing up other contract offers.

Clichy quits Arsenal for Man City

Posted July 5, 2011 06:37:00

Gael Clichy has joined Manchester City from Premier League rival Arsenal on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reportedly in the region of 7 million pounds.

The French left-back will now challenge Aleksandar Kolarov for a regular spot in Roberto Mancini's starting side.

Clichy spent nearly eight years at Arsenal and his move to big-spending City is bound to be seen as a comment on the status of the two clubs.

Last season City pipped Arsenal to third place in the league and won the FA Cup as the Gunners trophy drought, which stretches back to 2005, continued.

Now Clichy is the latest Arsenal 'old boy' at Eastlands where his team-mates will include Patrick Vieira, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor.

"I'm really happy to be joining such a great club," Clichy told City's official website.

"I hope I can add to the quality we already have here because we have a fantastic squad who I believe will continue to get better.

"I can't wait to get started and I think anything is possible with this team."

Clichy added he was delighted to be linking up again with two of his closest friends in football in Toure and Vieira.

"When I first came to England, it was Kolo Toure and Patrick Vieira who took me under their wing and really looked after me," he said.

"Kolo would pick me up and drop me at home and his wife used to cook meals for me.

"Patrick was always there to offer me advice so it's wonderful to be back and at the same club they are at."

Clichy, 25, made 264 appearances for Arsenal after signing from French club Cannes in August 2003.

He has won 10 caps for France to date, the last in 2010, and he was a member of Arsenal's 'Invincibles' team that won the 2003/04 Premier League without losing a single game.

That meant the then 18-year-old Clichy won a championship medal, making him the youngest recipient in Premier League history.

Clichy initially found himself acting as cover for Ashley Cole at Arsenal before the England man's move across London to Chelsea saw him become a first-team regular.
