Socceroos focussed on tough Iraq clash

Updated October 11, 2012 10:14:09

Recent history with Iraq ensures the Socceroos are on high alert as they look to give their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign a badly-needed boost.

Australia head into Wednesday's (AEDT) qualifier in Doha knowing a loss to the Iraqis could put their quest to reach a third successive World Cup in Brazil in serious jeopardy following last month's shock loss to Jordan.

Coach Holger Osieck's men are favourites to claim three points at the neutral venue in Qatar but they are keenly aware it will not be easy against an Iraq side which has proved stubborn opposition for Australia in recent years.

At senior and restricted age level, Australia are yet to defeat Iraq in regulation time in matches played away from home.

The Socceroos did win their last clash at the 2011 Asian Cup but only after a Harry Kewell goal deep into extra time after the regular period finished scoreless.

The sides split their four clashes prior to that with Iraq prevailing in matches in 2007 and 2008 and Australia winning home games in 2005 and 2008 by a single goal.

"I can't remember an easy game against Iraq," said Socceroos midfielder Carl Valeri, whose first encounter with Iraq with the under-23 Olyroos resulted in a 1-0 loss at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

"I can't remember an easy game in Asia in general but Iraq are definitely one of the toughest opponents we've come across."

While the Socceroos have been in camp in Doha for several days, Iraq will not touch down at the Qatari capital until Friday.

Their 30-man squad is in Sweden preparing with a glamour friendly against 2014 hosts Brazil on Friday morning (AEDT).

Iraq's game against the five-time world champions will boost the match sharpness of an ageing line-up that still boasts some of the country's most celebrated football talents.

Goalkeeper Noor Sabri, defender Bassim Abbas, midfielders Nashat Akram and Qusay Munir and striker Younis Mahmoud - collectively the spine of the Iraqi line-up - can count close to a staggering 500 international caps between them.

"They're a very difficult team and they have a lot of games together as a unit," said midfielder Mile Jedinak, who started in the Asian Cup triumph over Iraq last year.

"They're almost like a club team in a sense because they have so many caps together, the majority of them.

"We know we did it last time, in a tough game in the Asian Cup.

"I think we deservedly won that game and hopefully more of the same will come next Tuesday."

The Socceroos are third in their five-team qualification group with five matches still to play.

The top two qualify directly for the Brazil showpiece event - though Japan already look on track for top spot - with the third-placed team needing to win two sudden-death play-offs.

Valeri said the mood within camp in Doha reflected Australia's situation.

"We're all pretty focused. It's not so much about catching up (with each other) this time," Valeri said.

"We always like to have a laugh but this time it's more serious.

"We know what's at stake here."

Chelsea, Arsenal get tough Champions draws

Updated December 17, 2011 17:21:13

England's two surviving Champions League teams, Chelsea and Arsenal, were handed tough ties against Italian opposition in Friday's draw for the last 16, while holder Barcelona will play Germany's Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea will take on Napoli, while Arsenal will meet reigning Serie A champion AC Milan, with both Premier League clubs travelling to Italy first.

Chelsea has never previously faced Napoli, but it will know not to take Walter Mazzarri's side lightly after it qualified for the last 16 at the expense of Manchester City.

The 2008 beaten finalists have also only ever won once in Italy in seven attempts.

For Arsenal, meanwhile, the clash with Milan is a repeat of their meeting at the same stage in 2007-08.

On that occasion the Gunners won 2-0 on aggregate, with Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor scoring late goals in the second-leg at the San Siro after a goalless first-leg.

Nevertheless, Milan has also been eliminated by English clubs in the round of 16 in each of the last two campaigns, losing to Tottenham last season, and to Manchester United in 2010.

Barcelona will go to Germany first to face the 2002 runner-up Leverkusen, which qualified from Group E behind Chelsea.

There is history between the clubs, as Leverkusen beat Barca in the 1987-88 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, on the way to winning its only European trophy to date.

However, the Catalans will fancy their chances of gaining revenge this time as they aim to become the first club to win the Champions League in successive seasons.

"We have got Bayer Leverkusen! That's not a bad draw! I have always enjoyed playing in Germany. The atmosphere is always great there," Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said on Twitter from Japan, where Pep Guardiola's side are currently preparing for Sunday's Club World Cup final against Santos.

Real Madrid, which romped through the group stage winning all six games in Group D, will be heavy favourite to beat CSKA Moscow.

Meanwhile Bayern Munich, which is hoping to reach the final at its own Allianz Arena, will meet Manchester United's conqueror Basel.

Marseille will take on 2010 winner Inter Milan in a tie that sees Claudio Ranieri once again come up against Didier Deschamps.

Ranieri was in charge of Chelsea when it lost to Deschamps' Monaco in the semi-finals of the competition in 2004.

Benfica meet Zenit St Petersburg, while Lyon will face tournament outsider APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus.

Joeys get tough World Cup draw

Posted May 18, 2011 14:48:00

Australia's young footballers have been drawn into a tough group featuring powerhouse Brazil for next month's FIFA under 17s World Cup in Mexico.

The Joeys will also face Ivory Coast and Denmark in Group F at the tournament, to be held from June 18 to July 10.

Joeys coach Jan Versleijen acknowledges progressing from the group stage will be challenging but is confident his side will be competitive.

"The advantage that we have going into the tournament is that the majority of our squad is based at the Australian Institute of Sport and the players are very familiar with each other," he said.

"Again our goal will be to progress from the group phase into the knock-out phase and then beyond."

Australia faces Ivory Coast on June 20, Brazil on June 23 and Demark on June 26.
