Dubious penalty helps Jets past Mariners

Updated October 21, 2012 00:08:55

Emile Heskey was at the centre of a dubious penalty decision before scoring his second goal in the A-League as Newcastle beat Central Coast 2-1 in the F3 Derby at Hunter Stadium.

Heskey looked to fall easily under pressure while scrapping for the ball with Michael McGlinchey in the Mariners' box with Ryan Griffiths converting the contentious spot kick.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold was aghast at the awarding of a fourth-minute penalty to the home side.

"I just thought it was a pretty average performance from the ref to be honest," Arnold said.

"Mickey McGlinchey weighs 67 kilos and Emile Heskey weighs 100 kilos.

"My blood pressure has gone through the roof.

"I will probably be labelled a whinger but that's the way it goes."

Both sides exchanged chances in a physical game but despite finishing the first half strongly, Central Coast looked all at sea after the break as the Jets piled on the pressure.

Heskey gave his side some breathing space on 61 minutes, but James Virgili deserved all the credit after the youngster went past both Pedj Bojic and Patrick Zwaanswijk on a mazy run before setting up the ex-Liverpool front man for the easiest of finishes from close range.

"He (Virgili) is now going to get a lot of attention from other teams and it is something that he is going to have to get used to," Newcastle coach Gary Van Egmond said.

"We put things in place and the boys carried it out, which was great.

"Emile was superb again today and he helped with the assist on the first goal as well as scoring the second. You can't ask for much more from him."

Bernie Ibini netted what turned out to be a consolation goal for the Mariners in the 72nd minute after he was on the end of a McGlinchey cutback after striker Daniel McBreen had won the initial header.

Jets keeper Mark Birighitti had no chance as Ibini tapped in from the edge of the six yard box.

Newcastle then survived a thrilling finish after Zwaanswijk looked to have earned the Mariners a share of the points when he headed home in the sixth minute of stoppage time, only for the assistant referee to controversially rule him offside.

The match was a typically feisty local derby with a series of niggly fouls throughout the contest, with referee Ben Williams issuing nine yellow cards.

Jets midfielder Ruben Zadkovich was lucky not to be given his marching orders after a cheap foul in the 52nd minute sparked a melee.

Players from both sides had to be separated as tempers threatened to boil over.

Newcastle Jets: 2 (R Griffiths (pen) 5', E Heskey 62')

Central Coast Mariners: 1 (B Ibini 72')

Late Lampard penalty rescues England

Updated September 12, 2012 09:24:07

Frank Lampard rescued a point for England when he scored an 87th minute penalty to force a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in their Group H World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Wednesday (AEST).

England finished with 10 men when captain Steven Gerrard was sent off a minute after the equaliser for a second yellow card as it struggled following Friday's opening 5-0 win in Moldova.

Ukraine looked like inflicting a rare home World Cup defeat on England after Evhen Konoplianka's stunning 39th minute goal, until Lampard struck after Evhen Khacheridi handled in the area.

England substitute Danny Welbeck hit the post just before the equaliser and Jermain Defoe had a goal ruled out for an infringement in the first half but Ukraine also had chances and in the end was disappointed to leave with just one point.

The home side had the best chances in the first half although Ukraine started brighter and played better football, keeping possession and pressing the hosts back into defence.

England was unlucky not to score in the 11th minute when Defoe found the net with a fierce shot from 20 metres only for Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir to disallow the effort, ruling the striker illegally challenged Andriy Yarmolenko in the build-up.

England began to get on top as the half wore on and Defoe set up Tom Cleverley with a golden opportunity after 34 minutes but the midfielder shot straight at keeper Andriy Pyatov's feet.

Cleverley later missed two other scoring chances, scuffing one and hitting the outside of the post with the other.

Ukraine's 39th minute goal, which Konoplianka curled home delightfully from 20 metres, was not a total shock for the home fans because Ukraine looked dangerous in attack from the start.

Oleh Gusyev hit the post with a deflection off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after four minutes while Ruslan Rotan's effort was cleared by Gerrard after it beat goalkeeper Joe Hart 10 minutes later before Denys Garmash put a difficult chance over the bar.

Elsewhere in European World Cup qualifying, reigning world champion Spain laboured to a 1-0 win away to Georgia courtesy of a late goal from Valencia striker Roberto Soldado.

Handed a rare start ahead of fellow strikers Fernando Torres and David Villa, Soldado fluffed a chance in the first half but made no mistake from close range when set up by substitute Cesc Fabregas in the 86th minute.

It was cruel on the home side, who had held out stubbornly against their illustrious visitors despite seeing little of the ball and losing goalkeeper Giorgi Loria to injury with some 20 minutes from time.

"It was very tough to find space and create chances but at the end we managed to get the breakthrough," said Soldado after taking his tally to four goals in his sixth appearance for Spain.

Italy laboured to a similarly scrappy 2-0 win over Malta in their Group B qualifier in Modena, with an early strike from Mattia Destro and a late Federico Peluso header enough to earn them the three points.

Roma striker Destro latched on to a smart Claudio Marchisio through ball after five minutes but Cesare Prandelli's side struggled to build on their fast start in a lacklustre first half that drew jeers from the crowd.

Napoli's highly-rated Lorenzo Insigne replaced the disappointing Alessandro Diamanti at the start of the second half and Italy showed more attacking intent but had to wait until the last minute for Peluso to head the second goal from an Andrea Pirlo corner.

Germany survived a torrid first half against neighbours Austria before Marco Reus and Mesut Ozil scored either side of half-time to give them a 2-1 win in Vienna.

The Germans clung on for three points and only won after Marko Arnautovic missed a great chance for the hosts in the 87th minute.

Reus burst down the left, cut inside Gyorgy Garics and buried a low shot past Robert Almer three minutes before the break after the feisty hosts, fielding nine German Bundesliga-based players, had looked capable of producing an upset.

Ozil, scorer of two goals in the 3-0 win over Faroe Islands on Friday, converted a penalty after Veli Kavlak recklessly clattered into Thomas Mueller.

Austria, playing its opening match in Group C, refused to lie down and Zlatko Junuzovic pulled one back in the 57th minute, turning in the ball in after Arnautovic forced his way to the byline and sent a low cross into the goalmouth.

In a heavyweight clash in Group A, Belgium recovered from conceding an early goal but failed to capitalise on its second-half dominance in a 1-1 draw with Croatia in Brussels.

The home side, narrow bookmakers' favourites to win the group despite their lowly 40th world ranking, fell a goal behind in the sixth minute, equalising on the stroke of half-time before neat footwork created chances but not goals.

Croatia's Ivan Perisic drove in an easy opener when Vincent Kompany failed to fully clear Darijo Srna's cross.

However Belgium's Guillaume Gillet, the sole home starter still playing for a Belgian club, thundered in an equaliser from a half-cleared corner in the final play of the first half.

In other major European results, Serbia thrashed Wales 6-1 in Novi Sad, the Netherlands humbled Hungary 4-1 on the road in Budapest, France downed Belarus 3-1 in Paris, Scotland drew 1-1 with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in Glasgow and Portugal thumped Azerbaijan 3-0 in Braga.

Udinese miss out after penalty blunder

Updated August 29, 2012 14:40:52

Udinese missed out on the Champions League for the second season running, losing on penalties to Braga in the playoffs after a comical shootout miss to leave Italy with only two clubs in Europe's top competition.

Brazilian substitute Maicosuel tried to emulate Andrea Pirlo's effort for Italy against England at Euro 2012 by nonchalantly chipping the ball into the middle of the goal but mis-hit his shot and allowed Braga's goalkeeper Beto to save.

Spain's Malaga, facing uncertainty behind the scenes amid speculation that their Qatari owner is looking to sell up, overcame their internal worries to reach the group stage for the first time after drawing 0-0 at Panathinaikos.

Anderlecht qualified for the first time since 2006/07 with a 2-0 win over AEL Limassol, denying the Cypriot champions a chance to emulate APOEL Nicosia who reached the quarter-finals last time.

The Belgians were joined in the group stage and Thursday's draw in Monaco by BATE Borisov of Belarus and Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb, who both qualified for the second year running.

Portuguese side Braga's collection of Brazilian journeymen won 5-4 on penalties against shattered Udinese after the two sides drew 1-1 for a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Beaten by Arsenal at the same stage last season, Udinese made a jittery start against opponents wearing the same colour strip as the English side but went ahead after 25 minutes.

Dusan Basta hooked a cross into the area and Pablo Armero dived in to head the ball beyond goalkeeper Beto.

The Colombian also had a golden chance to add a second early in the second half when he had a free shot on goal but, in a moment of pure slapstick, slipped over as he took aim.

Braga, whose side includes seven Brazilians who are mostly well-travelled and have plied their trade at unglamorous clubs, were in control by then and levelled when substitute Ruben Micael headed in Mossoro's cross in the 72nd minute.

Udinese's defeat means Italy will have only Serie A champions Juventus and seven-times European Cup winners AC Milan in the group stage.

Malaga, Anderlecht, BATE Borisov and Dinamo Zagreb also qualified on Wednesday (AEST).

Berisha clear about winning penalty

Updated April 23, 2012 16:46:12

Besart Berisha has a clear conscience over the controversial penalty award that sealed Brisbane's second straight A-League title.

The Albanian striker, who took his goal tally for the season up to 21 with his grand final brace, said the challenge from Liam Miller was undoubtedly a penalty.

"I just saw again some pictures this morning and you can see clearly the touch from the Perth player and I lost my balance," Berisha said.

"It was clearly a penalty."

However unfairly, Berisha appears likely to be saddled with a reputation as a diver and he was at pains to point out this is the first time in his time in Australia he has been accused of simulation.

"I never made a penalty during the season," Berisha said. "I do not do that.

"You can see the touch from the defender and then I lost my balance. I am very happy the referee gives the penalty.

"If not for sure I would have hit the ball if I had not been out of my balance.

"This is the way it is in football. It is not easy to lose. I understand Perth is upset."

With regular penalty taker Henrique off the field, Berisha confidently stepped up to take the spot kick after seeing his team-mates seemed less keen to do so.

"I saw the boys they were looking who wanted to take it - I was looking for Henrique," Berisha said.

"I felt good. I felt confident after the first penalty. I was very glad.

"I missed a penalty in Melbourne. I feel very bad. I didn't want to miss again.

"I am so happy for the team. It's not about the penalty it's about the way we played all year."

Penalty drama dents Arsenal's title bid

Updated April 18, 2011 07:01:00

Arsene Wenger's hopes of guiding Arsenal to the Premier League title are in tatters after Dirk Kuyt's last-gasp penalty earned a dramatic 1-1 draw for Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

With new majority shareholder Stan Kroenke watching from the directors' box, Wenger's side appeared to have snatched a stoppage-time victory when Cesc Fabregas was tripped by Jay Spearing in the penalty area.

Robin van Persie scored from the spot but Arsenal could not keep its composure and there was more drama to come, with Lucas Leiva bundled over by Emmanuel Eboue in the 12th minute of added time and Kuyt converting the spot-kick.

It leaves Arsenal six points behind leaders Manchester United with six games for each side to play and the Gunners' confidence sure to dip even further after three consecutive draws on their own turf.

"Essentially we have cup final after cup final now," was Wenger's assessment of his team's title chances when he wrote his programme notes.

But they were unable to rise to the occasion and a season that at one stage could have delivered a quadruple will now almost certainly end up with nothing to celebrate.

The hosts were able to recall Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after a finger injury, while Switzerland defender Johan Djourou returned from a dislocated shoulder despite being ruled out for the season when he picked up the problem.

Djourou could have given a penalty away in the opening stages of the match when Spearing went over his challenge in the area, but referee Andre Marriner waved play on.

Another goalless draw for Arsenal appeared unlikely during a burst of goalmouth action which started when Pepe Reina parried Theo Walcott's drive and John Flanagan had to clear desperately when van Persie hooked the rebound into the danger area.

From the resulting corner from van Persie, Laurent Koscielny jumped above Jamie Carragher and headed against the crossbar, with Walcott claiming a handball against Lucas when his follow-up shot.

Van Persie also had the ball in the net when he volleyed home Fabregas's long pass over the Liverpool defence, but the Dutch forward had been ruled offside.

Liverpool soaked up the rest of the first-half pressure without conceding, although Flanagan and Skrtel were given yellow cards for rash challenges.

Fabio Aurelio also picked up an injury and needed to be replaced by Jack Robinson, meaning the visitors had youngsters in both full-back positions.

After the break Kenny Dalglish's team threatened to take the lead when Uruguay forward Luis Suarez went on a run and curled his finish just wide. He also tested Szczesny with a long-range effort.

England striker Andy Carroll had looked a threat and Liverpool were breathing a sigh of relief when he went over his ankle but was able to play on.

Carragher, however, needed to be substituted after smacking into Flanagan and getting carried off on a stretcher in need of oxygen and a neck brace.

That accounted for the long period of injury-time, with van Persie opening the scoring before Kuyt's leveller with the final kick of the game.

Wenger responded by stalking towards Dalglish to protest that Lucas had dived but the Scot's angry response quickly brought an end to the conversation.
