Jets land Neville from Glory

Updated May 07, 2012 21:46:01

Newcastle has snared the services of Perth Glory defender Scott Neville for the next two A-League seasons, but Jets striker Jeremy Brockie has left the A-League club.

Neville was offered a two-year contract extension to stay at the Glory but turned down the reduced deal in order to link up with the Jets.

Newcastle also locked up Melbourne Heart left back Craig Goodwin for the next two seasons, and announced it had parted ways with Brockie, Ali Abbas and Tarek Elrich.

The Jets had been in negotiations to retain 24-year-old Brockie, but the New Zealand international was said to be also exploring his options overseas after scoring nine goals last season.

Neville established himself as one of Glory's most important players during his four years at the club, notching 63 games and filling in as skipper several times.

The hard-running defender's 2011-12 campaign was severely disrupted by a serious knee injury, but the 23-year-old made it back in time to play a handy role off the bench in Perth's run to the grand final.

Perth was eager to keep Neville, but could only offer him a reduced deal due to the club's major cost-cutting drive.

"Scott was a player we wanted to keep so it's disappointing (he) has decided to leave," Glory coach Ian Ferguson said.

Jets coach Gary van Egmond praised the character of Neville, describing him as just the type of player Newcastle needed.

Goodwin, originally from Adelaide, was named man of the match in his A-League debut against Melbourne Victory in round 19.

The 20-year-old went on to play four more games for the Heart, and also earned a call-up to the Olyroos squad for their final Olympic qualifying match against Iraq.

Neville says farewell to Red Devils

Updated May 25, 2011 09:48:00

David Beckham and Ryan Giggs both made appearances as former team-mate Gary Neville waved farewell to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Around 42,000 fans saw Juventus emerge 2-1 winners in Neville's testimonial game which marks the final chapter in his playing career before a move into the media.

And the 36-year-old is hoping his first task will be to see his old club beating Barcelona in the Champions League final.

"The most important thing for this club now is to go and win that trophy on Saturday," said Neville, who spent 20 years at United.

There was no mention of Giggs' off-field problems, after the Welsh player was named by a British MP as the footballer who had sought to prevent details of an alleged affair being published, as the veteran set up Wayne Rooney for United's only goal.

Simone Pepe headed home to equalise for Juventus before a Manuel Giandonatro free-kick swerved past Edwin van der Sar to give the Italians the lead.

Paul Scholes, Anderson, John O'Shea and Rafael also played some part, although there was no action for Darren Fletcher.

Neville thanked Beckham, Nicky Butt and brother Phil, who helped complete the famed 'Class of 92' for one more United appearance.

And Beckham echoed Neville's words of hope for his old club this weekend.

"I hope we win. It is as simple as that," Beckham said.

"Barcelona are such a great football side, one of the best in the world.

"But if any club, and any manager, can beat them it is Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson. The manager continues to do it.

"He continues changing teams and players, yet Manchester United keep on going.

"That is why there is so much respect for him throughout the game and why he is the best manager in the world."
