Jeffers to miss Gold Coast clash

Updated January 02, 2012 14:06:30

Newcastle Jets striker Francis Jeffers will miss Wednesday's A-League clash with Gold Coast United due to an ankle injury.

Jeffers will undergo scans but it's hoped he will be back available for the Jets trip to Melbourne Victory on Saturday.

The England international rolled his ankle after scoring in the 1-1 draw with Perth on New Year's Eve.

The 30-year-old former Arsenal and Everton player had an action-packed cameo, coming on in the 56th minute, scoring six minutes later and hobbling off four minutes after the goal due to a collision with goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.

Midfielder Kasey Wehrman, who delivered the pass for Jeffers to head home against the Glory, said it's a shame to lose the marksman.

"Missing him is a big blow ... I thought if he stayed on the pitch the other night for the last 20 minutes, we probably would have won the game," he said.

"I think he's just a bit bruised and battered and we're hopeful he's only out for a week."

Jets lose Jeffers to visa delays

Updated October 27, 2011 16:51:00

Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond says English striker Francis Jeffers will not be available to play for the club this weekend because his visa is yet to be processed.

Jeffers signed a one-year deal with the club this week after playing a short stint with the Jets last season.

Newcastle takes on the Gold Coast at Robina on Sunday, looking to back up last week's 1-0 win over rivals Central Coast.

Van Egmond says he hopes Jeffers will get the clearance to play as soon as possible.

"He's still got obviously some issues as far as his visa is concerned and the International Transfer Certificate," he said.

"So at this moment, no he won't be available unfortunately."

Van Egmond, Jeffers return to Jets

Updated October 20, 2011 13:04:05

The Newcastle Jets have received a huge double boost with the return of both A-League winning coach Gary van Egmond and former England striker Francis Jeffers.

Jeffers, who arrives on Friday, will play the full season with the Jets, subject to passing a medical.

The former Everton and Arsenal star could feature as soon as Sunday's home F3 derby clash with Central Coast Mariners.

The 30-year-old forward inspired the Jets to a seven-game winning streak during a nine-game guest stint last season.

He has been without a club since he was released by Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell in June.

Van Egmond, who has penned a two-year deal, will again guide the club he coached to victory in the 2007-08 grand final.

He replaces Branko Culina, who was sacked on October 4, four days before the opening game of the season.

Interim coach Craig Deans will occupy the coach's seat for Sunday's big clash with the Mariners before van Egmond assumes control from Monday.

Van Egmond has resigned from his position at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he worked for the past three years.

He broke his contract with the Jets in 2008 to take up a position at the AIS.

Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby was confident the appointment of van Egmond would be a successful one.

"We had a short-list of excellent applicants but in a purely objective process, Gary scored high in all the important criteria," Middleby said.
