Drogba guides Chelsea to win over Barca

Updated April 19, 2012 08:21:19

Didier Drogba scored the only goal as Chelsea stunned holders Barcelona to score a 1-0 upset victory in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba left Chelsea dreaming of advancing to its first final since 2008 in next week's return leg at Camp Nou after pouncing on the stroke of half-time, as Barcelona suffered its first European reverse of the season.

Drogba's goal was Chelsea's only attempt on target in a match where Barcelona carved out chance after chance only to be denied by some desperate defending by its Premier League opponents.

Chelsea had taken the lead in first-half injury-time after an opening 45 minutes in which it had been comprehensively outplayed by the visitors.

Frank Lampard released Ramires down the left flank with a superb cross-field pass and the Brazilian threaded his pass across the area to Drogba, who swept a low shot past scrambling Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Until then, Chelsea had been clinging on as Barcelona dominated for long periods with its customary slick passing game.

The Catalans might have taken the lead after only nine minutes when Andres Iniesta picked out Alexis Sanchez with a delightful chipped pass, only for the Chilean international's lob over Petr Cech to hit the bar.

Chelsea, who had opted for the muscular presence of Drogba in attack ahead of Fernando Torres, signalled its intentions early on, pumping a series of long balls forward for the Ivorian.

But genuine chances for Chelsea were few and far between while at the other end Cech was working overtime in the face of a relentless Barcelona.

Cech had to be alert on 18 minutes after Lionel Messi darted into the box and cut back for Iniesta, whose fierce low shot was well saved by the Chelsea custodian before Cesc Fabregas scuffed his follow-up wide.

Fabregas tested Cech soon afterwards, his angled shot beaten away on 26 minutes.

Cech was pressed into action two minutes later, saving after Messi met a Sanchez cross with a downward header.

A goal seemed a certainty two minutes from the half-time when Messi won the ball in midfield and raced forwards menacingly.

The Argentine threaded his pass through to Fabregas, who dinked his shot over the advancing Cech. The former Arsenal star's effort just appeared to be spinning in but Ashley Cole was on hand to hook the ball clear.

That appeared to be the final twist of the half until Drogba's dramatic strike shot Chelsea into the lead two minutes into time added on.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea's goal was the cue for a sustained Barcelona onslaught after the break, yet the home side once again were able to frustrate the visitors despite their near-monopoly of possession.

Adriano was the first to test Chelsea again on 51 minutes, skipping over a challenge from Branislav Ivanovic and unleashing a venomous shot that Cech, diving at full stretch, parried to safety.

Moments later it was Messi's turn, advancing forwards only for his shot to be well blocked by John Terry.

On 57 minutes Barcelona threatened again when Fabregas lofted a sublime pass into the area for Sanchez, but a desperate covering tackle from Cole was enough to unbalance the Chilean, who shot wide.

Barcelona continued to dominate but with Chelsea defending deep and in numbers, it was unable to find a breakthrough.

It came close to an equaliser on 87 minutes but once again Cech came to the rescue. Messi whipped in a low free-kick and Carles Puyol stooped to glance a header goalwards, only for Cech to dive and turn behind for a corner.

In stoppage time Pedro struck the woodwork and then Sergio Busquets blazed over as Chelsea hung on for a famous win.

Rooney guides United to victory

Updated March 27, 2012 10:15:19

Wayne Rooney's 21st Premier League goal of the season secured a 1-0 victory for Manchester United over Fulham to put them three points clear of Manchester City in the title race.

Rooney's close-range strike after 41 minutes at Old Trafford proved enough to see off an unambitious Fulham side and take the champions, who survived a strong late penalty appeal, to 73 points with eight matches remaining.

City had moved top on goal difference with a 1-1 draw at Stoke City at the weekend but United responded with a ninth victory from their last 10 league matches and are now favourites to retain the title.

United manager Alex Ferguson, closing in on a 13th English top flight championship, says his team deserves the three points despite tiring near the end.

"I thought for an hour we played very well, the passing was quick and decisive and we made some decent opportunities but Fulham put in a very determined defensive performance," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"A bit of tiredness came into our game and we started to give the ball away and they capitalised. The disappointing thing was that we never finished them off when we should have."

United struggled for fluency in the first half as Fulham initially posed some threat with American striker Clint Dempsey forcing a fine save from goalkeeper David de Gea.

Gradually United exerted pressure and the breakthrough came with half-time approaching as a cross into the area bounced kindly off Fulham's John Arne Riise for the alert Jonny Evans to cut the ball back for Rooney to crash the ball past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The home side improved after the break and should have spared themselves anxious late moments.

Ryan Giggs skewed one chance wide and Antonio Valencia squandered another when he shot straight at Schwarzer after being sent clear by Giggs' pass.

Schwarzer also made superb saves to twice deny Ashley Young as United searched for the killer goal.

It did not arrive, though, and Martin Jol's mid-table Fulham applied late pressure, Fulham having a strong appeal for a late penalty waved away when Danny Murphy tumbled in the area under a clumsy challenge from Michael Carrick.

"I think everyone in the stadium expected a penalty to be honest," Jol said.

"But you have to be brave to give a penalty away at Manchester United.

"We could have had a result and I think they looked pretty nervous at the end."

Ferguson says United should also have had a penalty but acknowledged that they got a little fortunate.

"Certainly Michael Carrick caught Danny Murphy's heels when he came back," Ferguson said.

"But I think we deserved (some luck) because we completely dominated the game until that last 15 minutes."

Simon guides Mariners to victory

Updated January 05, 2012 00:26:40

A brilliant brace from departing striker Matt Simon helped Central Coast Mariners defeat Melbourne Victory 2-0 in an energetic match in Gosford.

The win sees the Mariners take their unbeaten streak to 11 matches and gives them a six-point buffer at the top of the table.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold was delighted with his side's effort.

"It was a fantastic night, and I think the performance of the season. A fairytale finish for Matty, and the crowd enjoyed it. It was great to play in front of a good crowd," he said.

"One thing we have really focused on this year is to play the game not the scoreboard, and it's a message I will keep telling them now. Play each game, not the table."

With a boisterous crowd of 12,284 at their backs the home side got off to the best possible start with a goal after just 19 seconds of play.

Troy Hearfield took full advantage of a defensive slip by Petar Franjic to tee up Simon, in his last match before joining Korean club Chunnam Dragons, for his 35th goal for the club.

It was a night of milestones all round with Central Coast midfielder John Hutchinson playing in his 300th Australian club match, and striker Troy Hearfield making his 100th A-League appearance.

In his starting debut for the home side, Hearfield was intent on demonstrating his credentials for the soon to be vacant striking spot, finishing without a goal, but forcing two great saves from Ante Covic.

The visitors were fortunate not to concede a penalty five minutes into the second half when a cross from Simon appeared to connect with the outstretched arm of Roridgo Vargas.

The star-studded Victory attack continued to press forward in the second half but were constantly thwarted by teenage defender Trent Sainsbury and goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

In an incredibly fast-tempo affair it was the substitutes who had golden chances for both sides late in the second term, with the Mariners' Bernie Ibini hitting the post and Victory's Danny Allsopp denied by Ryan.

Fittingly Simon sealed the points with a stunning strike six minutes from time.

He departed the arena to a standing ovation with the knowledge that his side would stay at the top of the ladder.

Simon admits to having a few sleepless nights, saying the farewell appearance had turned out better than he could have imagined.

"It was an amazing night, and I'm grateful for the support I've had from everyone," Simon said.

"I have loved every minute of playing with this team."

Central Coast Mariners: 2 (M Simon 1', 85')

Melbourne Victory: 0

Fergie Jr guides Peterborough to promotion

Updated May 30, 2011 11:15:00

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson put a smile back on father Sir Alex Ferguson's face by leading his team into the Championship with a 3-0 win over Huddersfield in the League One play-off final at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Less than 24 hours after the elder Ferguson's dreams of Champions League glory were dashed by Barcelona's 3-1 victory over Manchester United, it was son Darren's turn in the spotlight and his team rose to the occasion as three late goals in the space of seven minutes clinched promotion.

Tommy Rowe opened the scoring in the 78th minute and Craig Mackail-Smith increased their lead two minutes later before Grant McCann struck in the 85th minute.

Ferguson junior was sacked by Preston earlier this season but that must have seemed a distant memory as he celebrated at the stadium where his father has enjoyed so many famous victories.

Peterborough, relegated from the Championship last season, had finished eight points behind third-placed Huddersfield and Lee Clark's team started as favourites due to an impressive 27-match unbeaten run in the league.

Ferguson had asked his dad to stay away from the match in case he proved a jinx after seeing Peterborough lose the first leg of their play-off semi-final against Milton Keynes Dons.

It worked a treat as Peterborough took the lead when Rowe headed in McCann's free-kick from close-range.

That proved a shattering blow for Huddersfield, who lost in the play-off semi-finals last season.

Mackail-Smith is widely expected to leave Peterborough for a bigger club during the close-season and the Scotland striker signed off in style when a deflected effort curled into the net for his 35th goal of the campaign.

Captain McCann put the result beyond doubt with a superb free-kick, leaving Darren to celebrate restoring some pride to the Ferguson family with his third promotion in four years.

"It was disappointing for him losing on Saturday. The whole family was disappointed for him and I'm pleased I've put a smile back on his face," Ferguson said of his father.
