Barcelona waltzes to club world title

Updated December 19, 2011 07:05:48

Lionel Messi grabbed a classy brace as the "artists" of Barcelona out-classed Brazilian side Santos 4-0 to lift the Club World Cup and confirm its status as the best team on the planet.

The clash between the European and South American champions in Japan had been billed as a showdown between Messi, widely acknowledged as the best player in the world, and 19-year-old Brazilian sensation Neymar.

In the event, it was no contest - either between the two supreme talents or their teams - as Barcelona picked up its second world crown after winning the competition in 2009, when Messi was again the difference.

Barca boss Pep Guardiola called his men "artists" and dedicated the 13th title in his three-and-a-half years in charge to striker David Villa, who flew home after fracturing his shin in the semi-final and faces five months out.

"We missed him very much. I talked to him a lot (since the bad injury) and I want to talk to him tonight," said Guardiola, full of praise for his charges who wore T-shirts in honour of their missing team-mate.

"They were like artists," he said, turning to their spectacular performance that secured the official title as the world's best side and saw the Catalan club net a cool $5 million.

"What was envisioned in their minds happened on the pitch."

Messi, set up by Xavi, got the first after 17 minutes, before Xavi put Barcelona 2-0 up just seven minutes later to put his side firmly in control, as prodigious forward Neymar struggled to get a sniff of the ball.

Cesc Fabregas, who pulled the strings in midfield, got the third on the stroke of half-time as the Spanish champions, who were at full-strength, threatened to run riot for the packed house of 68,166.

Messi got his second eight minutes from time as he rounded the keeper to roll the ball in after the influential Dani Alves threaded the ball through to him.

"We are extremely happy and our performance, especially in the first-half, was very satisfactory," said Guardiola, who declined to single out one player for more praise than the rest.

"I've tried to get the players to work together as a team and use the strengths they have.

"Our players have been playing very well, but it's important to keep that level going."

His opposite number Muricy Ramalho said there was no disgrace in defeat.

"Barcelona have played various teams around the world and nobody can beat them. Eventually some team may, but I don't think it's possible now," he said, adding Messi was without doubt the best but that Neymar would one day take that title.

"This was not embarrassing and it was not a blow to us. We need to be humble - we were beaten by the best team in the world."

Barca had the better of an open first 15 minutes, Messi forcing a save out of Rafael Cabral after skipping a couple of half-hearted Santos challenges.

Shortly after that the Argentine was at it again, taking a dinked pass from Xavi and lifting the ball delicately over Cabral from just a few yards out to put the Catalans into an early lead at the International Stadium in Yokohama.

It was all Barca, so it was no surprise when it went further ahead on 24 minutes, full-back Alves driving down the right wing and cutting inside to set up Xavi, who rifled the ball past an exposed Cabral.

Television cameras quickly focused on a glum-looking Neymar.

Still Barca and Messi kept coming.

On 26 minutes he was denied by a terrific last-gasp tackle when through on goal, and three minutes later Fabregas struck Cabral's post after he was set up by Xavi.

Fabregas and Barca would not be denied, as the former Arsenal man grabbed the third just before half-time after more good link-up play - including an audacious back-heel - from the irrepressible Messi.

Belatedly, the Brazilian side was up for it after Ramalho had sent it out onto the frigid pitch well ahead of its opponents.

Neymar should have found the net when clean through on goal just before the hour, but Victor Valdes saved well with his legs. It summed up the teenager's night.

Messi put the gloss on a polished performance from him and his side as he showed trademark deft footwork to dance around Cabral and walk the ball in for the fourth.

Earlier, Al Sadd, who lost 4-0 to Barcelona in the semi-finals, beat Japanese champions Kashiwa Reysol 5-3 on penalties to take third place at the annual intercontinental tournament.

Barcelona fights back to clinch El Clasico

Updated December 11, 2011 10:58:09

Barcelona overcame the shock of conceding a goal after just 23 seconds - the fastest in El Clasico history - to defeat bitter rivals Real Madrid 3-1 on Sunday morning and go top of La Liga.

French striker Karim Benzema scored the early goal to give Real a 1-0 lead after a terrible clearance from Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Alexis Sanchez, who was chosen ahead of David Villa, levelled in the 30th minute after a sublime through ball from Lionel Messi.

A drive from Xavi in the 53rd minute took a wicked deflection off Marcelo and beyond the desperate reach of Iker Casillas in the Real goal as Barcelona went into a 2-1 lead.

Cesc Fabregas added the third in the 65th minute, scoring with a diving header from a fine cross by Dani Alves.

It was the former Arsenal man's 10th league goal of the campaign.

Real, who now trails Barca on goal difference, still has a game in hand over the reigning champions, but this result brought to an end a 15-match winning streak in all competitions for Jose Mourinho's side.

Despite the win, Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, urged his team not to get carried away.

He is aware that by the time his side returns from the World Club Cup in Japan, Real will probably be back on top.

"Real will be the leaders again if they beat Sevilla," he said. "There is no point being the 'champions' in November or December."

For the first time in recent years the pressure was on champions Barcelona who knew that a defeat would have a serious bearing on the championship race.

Guardiola had been experimenting with a three-man defence but admitted it would be a risk at the Bernabeu with the strength of the Real attack and he chose instead to field a tried and trusted back four which included Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique.

Mourinho chose to play Benzema ahead of Gonzalo Higuain in the Real attack and the Frenchman put the home side ahead straight after the kick off thanks to some poor defending from Barca.

Valdes gave the ball to Angel Di Maria and while his cross was cut out, the ball fell to Mesut Ozil whose shot was saved but the rebound fell to Benzema who slotted home.

Real were buoyant and pressed the Barca backline, a tactic which Guardiola's men have used successfully against them in previous meetings.

More than anything it was the pace of the Real attack which was terrorising the visitors' defence but Messi gave Real reason not to get carried away with a trademark run, going round Sergio Ramos, and seeing his strike parried by Casillas.

The home side should have doubled its lead midway through the half when Ronaldo fired wide inside the box with time to pick his spot.

Along with Messi, Sanchez's runs were a constant problem and he drew Barca level with a clinical finish on the edge of the area after a fine through ball by Messi.

Barca took the lead through a slice of fortune when a Xavi shot flicked off Marcelo's foot, wrong footing the keeper, and the ball crept into the corner.

Real had the chances to equalise through a Ronaldo header which he failed to keep on target from just 10 yards out but Barca was also a danger at the other end.

The visitors extended their lead after Alves burst down the wing and crossed to the back post where Fabregas headed home.

Xavi then missed a header himself which could have given a wider victory but Real substitute Kaka also saw a shot well saved by the keeper.

An astonishing injury-time brace from Ruben Castro saw Real Betis come from behind to snatch a 2-1 win over Valencia and end a run of 10 matches without a victory.

Valencia, which is seven points behind Barcelona and Real, was undone in the final minutes.

Betis conceded against the run of play after 65 minutes in the cruellest way with Jose Dorado putting a Jeremy Mathieu cross into his own goal.

The Andalusian side appeared as though it was heading for defeat until Castro finally found his range, knocking in a Juanma Gomez cross in the first minute of time added-on and then grabbed the winner three minutes later after running through on goal.

Levante's surprising start to the season continued as a scrambled goal by defender Nano Rivas gave it a 1-0 victory over Sevilla which consolidated its fourth place.
