Brisbane Roar's Asian Champions League campaign is over after the A-League champions fell 4-2 to FC Tokyo in the rain on Wednesday night.
In order to advance to the knockout round, Brisbane needed full points from its remaining two group stage clashes as well as a host of other results to go its way.
Grand final hero Besart Berisha put the Roar on the board in the fourth minute as the visitors made an early bid for a vital Group F win.
But group leaders Tokyo had other ideas and equalised through Hideto Takahashi just a minute later before Kenta Mukuhara's 20th-minute strike gave the home side the advantage.
Reigning Johnny Warren Medallist Thomas Broich levelled things up again when he found his target in the 33rd minute but a Kazuma Watanabe penalty in the shadows of half-time put FC Tokyo ahead going into the break.
Watanabe scored the second of his brace on the hour mark to all but seal the win for his side and send the Roar home without the points.
More to follow.
FC Toyko: 4 (K Watanabe 43', 60', H Takahasi 5', K Mukuhara 20;)
Brisbane: 2 (B Berisha 4', T Broich 33')
