McLeish appointed Villa manager

Posted June 17, 2011 19:00:00

Aston Villa has confirmed the appointment of Alex McLeish as its new manager with immediate effect.

The 52-year-old makes the move across Birmingham just five days after resigning from his post at Birmingham City, whom he could not save from relegation from the English Premier League last season.

Villa pressed ahead with the appointment despite protests from supporters and a row with the Blues.

"I am honoured to have this opportunity to manage a club with such a fantastic history as Aston Villa's," McLeish said.

"The heritage, the history of success and the tradition of Aston Villa are compelling and irresistible. The challenge for me is to try to add my own chapter."

Villa has not yet confirmed the length of McLeish's contract but the club has said the Scot will commence duties immediately.

The Blues were angered when it became apparent McLeish was a contender for the Villa vacancy and accused their rivals of tapping up the former Rangers and Scotland boss.

They also demanded 5.4 million pounds ($8.2m) in compensation to cover the remaining two years of McLeish's contract but threats to report Villa to the Premier League or take out an injunction to block the move were not carried out.

McLeish becomes Villa's third full-time manager in nine months.

Martin O'Neill resigned just five days before the 2010-11 campaign began and his successor Gerard Houllier stepped down at the end of the season for health reasons.

McLeish added: "I know that some of our fans have voiced concerns and I can understand why.

"It will be up to me to convince you that I am the right man to drive the club forward and I intend to give absolutely everything to prove that I can be a success at the club."

Woodgate, Vieira headline released players

Posted June 16, 2011 21:25:00

Former internationals Jonathan Woodgate, Patrick Vieira and Owen Hargreaves were among those released by their clubs, the Premier League said on Thursday when they revealed a list of players given free transfers.

The departures of Manchester United's Hargreaves and Tottenham Hotspur's Woodgate were both widely expected after injuries blighted their spells with their clubs.

Hargreaves' time at Old Trafford was cursed by physical problems and the combative midfielder made only 39 appearances after joining to considerable fanfare from Bayern Munich for 17 million pounds in 2007.

Former Real Madrid defender Woodgate was similarly blighted and spent much of his three-and-a-half years at Tottenham on the treatment table.

The elegant defender was often touted as England's most naturally gifted centre back but managed only four games in his final two seasons.

World Cup winner Vieira, who turns 35 next week, was released by Manchester City after playing a bit-part role in their resurgence since joining them from Inter Milan in January last year.

England international Matthew Upson was one of eight players released by West Ham United as the Premier League's relegated clubs looked to reduce their squad numbers.

Blackpool released 11 players as they prepare for their return to England's second tier, while Birmingham City shed 12 from their books including former England striker Kevin Phillips.

Another French World Cup winner Robert Pires was released by Aston Villa after joining on a free transfer in November and former Liverpool, Chelsea and Netherlands midfielder Boudewijn Zenden was let go by Sunderland.

Socceroos play out Serbia stalemate

Updated June 7, 2011 22:46:00

Australia was put to the test by a second-string Serbian side but managed to play out a deserved and entertaining 0-0 draw at Docklands on Tuesday evening.

Serbia, missing a number of first team regulars but led by veteran midfielder Dejan Stankovic, arguably shaded the contest but were held accountable by the Socceroos who also had a handful of goalscoring chances.

Goalkeeper Adam Federici was outstanding between the posts, especially in the second half, as he looked to impress coach Holger Osieck and stake his claim for the no.2 spot behind the absent Mark Schwarzer.

Brett Holman was Australia's most dangerous up forward, but was unable to hit the target with a number of long range strikes as he tried to replicate his stunning goal in the Socceroos' 2-1 victory over Serbia at last year's World Cup.

Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson also enjoyed a bright start in his first international outing for 18 months in front of his adoring home fans.

James Troisi, who converted from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win over New Zealand on Sunday, had a 79th minute chance to steal victory for the Socceroos but his near post effort was well saved by Serbian keeper Damir Kahriman.

Serbia's best hope was fluffed badly by midfielder Adem Ljajic, who somehow shot over the bar on 40 minutes from five metres out.

"It was pretty level tonight, it could have gone both ways especially at the end there," Holman told Grandstand.

"Just a bit disappointing with the chances we did get, we didn't make the most of them."

Holman said Serbia were class opponents and provided a perfect challenge for a Socceroos side that is sounding out younger stars towards the 2014 World Cup.

"They are fantastic players, just look at their squad and where they play in Europe," Holman said of the visitors.

"They play in big clubs and you saw it tonight. They are good footballers and it was good for us tonight."

Holman said the squad continues to adopt Osieck's attacking style, no matter the opponent.

"You want to play in the way he wants us to play," he said.

"He wants us to be composed and compact at the back and try and play forward, create chances and that's exactly what we did today."

Positives over negatives

Osieck admitted to some disappointment at the looseness of the Socceroos' passing at times.

But overall he was pleased with the depth uncovered in this game and the New Zealand friendly ahead of the World Cup qualifiers expected to start in September.

"Basically, I got a lot more positives than negatives," Osieck said.

"We are not at the end of the road (of finding more depth).

"We are enlarging our squad. We have definitely already a couple more players who can really play for the Socceroos and that is really very positive."

Serbia coach Vladimir Petrovic was also impressed with what the Socceroos had to offer.

"I am very surprised with the level Australian football is on and they are certainly a very strong team, and they showed this," he said.

The result against the world No.16 Serbia takes Osieck's record with the Socceroos to eight wins, four draw and two losses from his 14 matches in charge.

Australia is still unbeaten at home in its last 10 matches.

Chubby Ronaldo bids farewell

Posted June 8, 2011 15:54:00

A chubby-looking Ronaldo said farewell to soccer in Brazil's lacklustre 1-0 win over Romania in a friendly, missing three chances in the 15 minutes he was on the pitch in Sau Paulo.

Fred, who started the match before making way with 15 minutes remaining in the first half for the former Brazil striker, scored the winner right in front of goal from Neymar's low left cross in the 22nd minute.

Ronaldo, 34, retired in February saying he struggled to keep his weight in check for the rigours of top flight soccer due to a thyroid problem.

The crowd at the Pacaembu were unhappy with Brazil's second-half performance in its last warm-up before defending the Copa America in Argentina next month, jeering the team towards the end and chanting Ronaldo's name.

Brazil, held 0-0 by the Netherlands in Goiania on the weekend, had a promising first half and managed to set up the chubby "Phenomenon", who played at walking pace, with three chances - but he missed them all.

The striker, who played for both Milan clubs and Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid in a brilliant career, was inside the six-yard box ready to tap in Maicon's low cross from the right but goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu blocked.

Robinho then set the unmarked Ronaldo up with an easier chance but the holder of a record 15 World Cup goals and two winners medals sliced the ball way over the top.

Neymar then pulled the ball back from the goalline on the right and Ronaldo shot low, bringing Tatarusanu to a good diving save.

"People, you are too much. Excuse me, I had goal chances and I didn't manage to score in my last match, my last 15 minutes," said Ronaldo, wrapped in a Brazilian flag, after a lap of honour of the Pacaembu where he played for his last club Corinthians.

"I can only thank you for all your support, all the love the Brazilian people have given me all these years," he told the crowd from the centre circle at half-time.

Romania's best chance was a fierce free kick by Gabriel Muresan from 30 metres out that hit Victor's bar midway through the first half.

Birmingham boss McLeish resigns by email

Updated June 13, 2011 08:31:00

Alex McLeish resigned as manager of Birmingham City on Sunday to round off a notable season where the club won their first trophy for 48 years but were then relegated from the Premier League.

"Acting chairman Peter Pannu received an e-mail resignation from McLeish earlier today while away on business in Amsterdam," the club said in a statement on their website.

McLeish, a former central defender who served Aberdeen and Scotland for many years, established his managerial reputation at Motherwell, Hibernian and Rangers before taking over as Scotland manager in January 2007.

It proved a short-lived appointment as he moved south to replace Steve Bruce at Birmingham in November of that year.

Birmingham were relegated at the end of his first season but he brought them immediately back up for the 2009/10 Premier League campaign where they finished ninth, their highest position for more than half a century.

This year they shocked Arsenal in the League Cup final but the success was followed by dramatic decline in their league form that ended with their relegation after a last-day defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

British media had earlier linked McLeish with a potentially controversial move across the city to take over the vacant Aston Villa manager's job following the resignation of Gerard Houllier through ill health and local bookmakers immediately made McLeish an odds-on favourite for that role following Birmingham's announcement.

McLeish was not the only managerial casualty on Sunday as Nottingham Forest, who missed out on promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs for the second successive season, sacked manager Billy Davies after two-and-a-half years in the job.

Liverpool completes Henderson signing

Posted June 10, 2011 07:06:00

Liverpool continues to bolster its squad by completing the signing of England midfielder Jordan Henderson from Sunderland.

No fee or details of his contract were disclosed, but Liverpool said Henderson had passed a medical and agreed personal terms to become manager Kenny Dalglish's first major signing since the end of last season.

Dalglish has identified the 20-year-old Henderson as a key player as he bids to bring the English league title back to Anfield for the first time since 1990.

"I'm over the moon to be here and the fans will see me giving everything I've got in every game I play," Henderson said on the Premier League club's website.

"Hopefully, they'll enjoy watching me as much as I'll enjoy playing for this club."

Newspaper reports said Henderson, capped once by England in its 2-1 friendly defeat by France last November, cost Liverpool around 20 million pounds and the player has now joined up with the England under-21 squad ahead of the European Championship in Denmark.

Henderson enjoyed a consistent season for Sunderland with a number of strong displays in the centre of midfield and is considered one of the country's best prospects.

He will now compete with Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, Jay Spearing, Christian Poulsen and Jonjo Shelvey for a place in Liverpool's midfield.

"He (Gerrard) is one of the best players in the world, you want to be playing with him and training with him to try and improve yourself as a player," Henderson said.

"I've trained with him once (for England) and he was unbelievable, to be honest.

"Steven has been a massive, massive player for Liverpool for years now and he still is.

"Hopefully I can learn a lot from him."

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli praised Henderson's maturity and work ethic.

"It is very difficult to believe you are talking to a 20-year-old. You think you're talking to a 25-year-old," Comolli said.

"He's very passionate about football, very committed, a top professional.

"He's the type of player who'll stay behind after training and do extra work."

Dalglish returned to Liverpool in January and although Spanish striker Fernando Torres left the club soon afterwards, he was replaced by England forward Andy Carroll and Uruguayan Luis Suarez for a combined fee of around 50 million pounds.

Jol named new Fulham boss

Posted June 7, 2011 19:00:00

Experienced Dutchman Martin Jol was named the new manager of Premier League side Fulham, replacing Mark Hughes who resigned last week after one season in charge.

The 55-year-old former Tottenham boss has agreed an initial two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

Jol, who was sacked by Spurs in 2007, was linked with the Fulham role last year but Dutch club Ajax refused to release him from his post as head coach.

He has been out of work since quitting Ajax last December and said he was excited at returning to England.

"I am very happy to join Fulham football club, a wonderful traditional club," he told Fulham's website.

"It is a club with good, solid foundations and a great fan base.

"I am looking forward to being part of the Fulham family and thank the chairman for the trust he's shown in me."

Fulham is owned by Mohammed Al Fayed, the multi-millionaire former owner of the Harrods department store.

Hughes guided Fulham to an eighth-place finish last season before quitting.

Although the Welshman immediately brushed off speculation linking him with the vacancy at fellow Premier League club Aston Villa, it is believed he is now in contention for the job.

Neuer inks Bayern contract

Updated June 09, 2011 16:33:00

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has passed his medical at Bayern Munich and has signed a five-year contract, the Bavarian club said.

"We're very happy to have acquired one of the world's best goalkeepers and we're happy about the long-term partnership," Bayern's sporting director Christian Nerlinger told the Bayern web site.

Neuer agreed terms last week to join Bayern from arch-rivals Schalke 04 having helped the Gelsenkirchen club win the German Cup this season and reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The move has angered Bayern fans who carried "No, Neuer" banners at recent matches.

Sports Brands Rush to Embrace Internet Marketing in China

Osieck backs Kewell to A-League

Posted June 6, 2011 06:27:00

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck says luring Harry Kewell back to Australia to join Melbourne Victory could be "extraordinary" and just what the A-League needs.

Kewell, 32, is reportedly considering a multi-million-dollar offer to join the Victory next season after the recent expiry of his contract with Turkish club Galatasaray.

The former Liverpool and Leeds midfielder met Victory officials in Melbourne this week, but his manager Bernie Mandic insisted the club was one in a "long list" in the hunt for his services.

While signing Kewell would still appear at long odds, securing the services of Australia's most famous soccer export would represent the biggest signing coup in six years of the A-League.

And Osieck threw his support behind the move after Australia's 3-0 win over New Zealand on Sunday.

"If that really happens then you can say it's going to be a big boost for the A-League," Osieck said.

"We talk about the standing and the quality, but if a player of his calibre would come back to Australia, for the A-League it would be extraordinary.

"I would definitely work on the move.

"I don't know how realistic it is, but if it really happens I think that is what the A-League needs, big names and in the shade of the big names the young players can develop.

"I think it's a perfect combination."

Head of the A-League Lyall Gorman stressed he was not privy to the progress of any negotiations, but said someone of Kewell's stature had the potential to significantly boost the league's attendances and exposure.

"He's got a wonderful brand on and off the field and would add tremendous value to the league," Gorman said.

According to reports on Sunday, Victory club chairman Anthony Di Pietro met Kewell in Melbourne last Monday to express interest in signing him, but said talks were not yet advanced.

Kewell's future had been up in the air since Galatasaray sporting director Bulent Tulun confirmed he and fellow Socceroo Lucas Neill would not be offered new contracts for next season.

The pair were linked with a move to newly-promoted English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers, while Kewell was apparently also on the radar of several clubs in America's MLS, as well as other A-League clubs including Sydney FC and Newcastle.

Mandic said on Saturday night Kewell would not be making any decisions on his future for some weeks and denied a deal was close to done with the Victory.

"You can add Melbourne Victory to a long list of clubs after Harry, which includes the majority of the A-League," Mandic said.

"We're in no hurry and Harry has said he's not thinking about football for the next couple of weeks."

Sydney-born Kewell has never ruled out returning to play in the A-League and has said in the past he is keen to play on to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

While his career had been blighted by injury at times, he returned to form to be one of Australia's best players at January's Asian Cup in Qatar.

Matildas starting spots up for grabs

Posted June 14, 2011 15:28:00

Australian coach Tom Sermanni says there are still two or three spots up for grabs for his starting XI heading into the upcoming women's World Cup in Germany.

The Matildas squad flew out of Australia on Tuesday and will play two practise matches before the tournament and Sermanni says he has only locked in around seven starters so far.

While Australia has a much less experienced squad than the one that reached the 2007 World Cup quarter-finals, Sermanni hopes to emulate that achievement and also get the Matildas playing an attractive style of football.

"I think in 2007 it wasn't so much about the result, I think it was about the way the team played and the character, we want to emulate that," Sermanni said.

Striker Lisa De Vanna, who starred in the last World Cup in China coming primarily off the bench, is more likely to start in Germany, according to Sermanni.

Sermanni said De Vanna had settled back into the squad again after she was sent home from a camp in Gosford last month for disciplinary reasons.

"We've got a management structure where we deal with Lisa and she's back in and I think she is ready to play," Sermanni said.

He said the Matildas do not lack goal scorers and intend to play positive football including against international powerhouse Brazil in their opening group match.

The coach was happy not to face unknown African quantity Equatorial Guinea until their second group game, with strong European side Norway the Matildas' final first-stage opponent.

Australia to host both Olyroos qualifiers

Updated June 6, 2011 17:08:00

Yemen's home leg of its 2012 Olympic football qualifier against Australia this month has been moved Down Under due to the security situation in Sanaa, officials said.

The decision followed Football Federation Australia being advised by Canberra that it was not safe to travel to the Middle Eastern nation.

FFA suggested to the Yemen FA that both matches be played in Australia, which was agreed upon and ratified by FIFA.

"Obviously we are really happy with this outcome in light of the current situation in Yemen," Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar said.

The matches will take place in Gosford and Newcastle on June 19 and 23 respectively.

Adelaide goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has been called up to the Olyroos squad to replace injured stopper Alex Cisak.

More than 200 demonstrators have been killed nationwide since protests in Yemen calling for the departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh first erupted in late January.

Scores more have died in armed clashes between loyalist troops and dissident tribesmen.

Olyroos squad: Mustafa Amini, Aziz Behich, Mark Birighitti, Dean Bouzanis, Oliver Bozanic, Isaka Cernak, Kofi Danning, Diogo Ferreira, Matthew Foschini, Jason Hoffman, Marko Jesic, Matthew Jurman, Ryan McGowan, Tahj Minniecon, Aaron Mooy, Scott Neville, Mitch Nichols, Mirjan Pavlovic, Andrew Redmayne, Sebastian Ryall, Rocco Visconte.

Placido Domingo to help fix FIFA's image

Updated June 7, 2011 08:41:00

Embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter has turned to opera singer Placido Domingo to help restore the tarnished image of soccer's world governing body.

The Spanish-born tenor will form part of a "solutions committee" which also includes former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger and former Netherlands forward Johan Cruyff.

"These gentlemen are more or less advisers. They are not the experts but advisers, and what they should be also is the kind of council of wisdom - which my executive committee would not like because they think they are the council of wisdom," Blatter, who was voted in unopposed for a fourth term as president last week, told CNN in an interview on Monday.

"Placido Domingo will be part - he is happy, he is proud that he is part - as Kissinger also - people say he (Kissinger) is an old man, but he is a wise man."

Blatter secured another four years in charge of FIFA after a vote in Zurich on Wednesday and immediately pushed through changes intended to make the choice of World Cup hosts more democratic and beef up the fight against corruption.

The crisis that has engulfed FIFA recently centred on Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chief Mohamed Bin Hammam's ultimately aborted campaign to take on Blatter in the election.

It also re-ignited the debate over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Bin Hammam's home country Qatar.

Bin Hammam was provisionally suspended by FIFA over bribery allegations along with FIFA vice-president Jack Walker while a leaked email written to Walker by FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke suggested Qatar had "bought the World Cup".

Valcke later clarified his comment, saying Qatar had merely used its financial muscle to lobby support. Qatar has denied any wrongdoing.

The 75-year-old Blatter said his newly-formed committee would decide whether Qatar's winning bid needed to be examined.

"Let me work now on this new approach of the ethics committee, let me work with this committee of solutions," he said.

"And if this committee of solutions or the ethics committee have the impression that they should do something then let them take the decisions."

Socceroos head to Melbourne on a high

Posted June 6, 2011 07:22:00

The Socceroos will head into Tuesday's clash with Serbia full of confidence after a makeshift side proved too strong for New Zealand in a 3-0 win at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Australia coach Holger Osieck was encouraged about the future after a host of fringe players stepped in for absent stars Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell and Mark Schwarzer with a solid performance.

Returning striker Josh Kennedy scored a double while young gun James Troisi marked a rare start with his first international goal in front of his hometown crowd.

The likes of Michael Zullo, Jon McKain, Matthew Spiranovic, Rhys Williams and Alex Brosque also impressed, with Osieck declaring they had proved their worth as squad players for the coming World Cup qualifying campaign.

They will hold a training session in Melbourne on Monday evening to prepare for the rematch with their 2010 World Cup group opponents.

Osieck is expected to field a strong side against the Serbians, with captain Lucas Neill set to play a part after missing the All Whites clash with a groin injury.

Regulars Mile Jedinak, Sasa Ognenovski and Matt McKay are also poised to start after being rested or given bit parts against New Zealand.

Osieck also gave big names Brett Emerton, Luke Wilkshire and Brett Holman only half games on Sunday in a bid to balance the weight of expectation on the side and the short turnaround between games.

"It was my challenge to find out how much I could load the individual players," Osieck said.

"Having the obligation here to perform in front of the home crowd in Adelaide, people came with great expectations, and I had to field a strong team.

"On the other hand, I had to balance out how far can I load them in the one game considering the fact the next one is in 48 hours and I think so far we are in a position that in another two days that the players that will start will be ready."

Emerton stood in as captain for Neill against the Kiwis and said he was honoured to have led the Socceroos for only the second time as well as praising the efforts of the side's young players.

"I think they did exactly the job that was asked of them," Emerton said.

"They weren't overawed by the occasion and some of the boys showed a bit of flair ... It was good to watch."

Germany keeps Euro bid on track

Posted June 8, 2011 08:04:00

Germany went 10 points clear at the top of its Euro 2012 qualifying group overnight as stars Mario Gomez and Mesut Ozil netted in a 3-1 win over minnows Azerbaijan.

Now only a mathematical chance remains of Joachim Loew's side failing to qualify for next year's finals, to be hosted by the Ukraine and Poland, as they picked up their seventh straight win in Group A.

Despite coming to Baku, near the Caspian Sea, with a depleted squad, the Germans still had enough young talent to comfortably see off Azerbaijan and at 27 years old, captain Philipp Lahm was the oldest German on the pitch.

"Hard to believe that at 27, I was the oldest out there, but it shows the depth of young talent we have in the squad," said Lahm, who was winning his 80th cap.

Real Madrid star Ozil opened the scoring with half an hour gone at the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium when he latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area and curled his shot around diving goalkeeper Kamran Agayev.

The winger then turned provider for the second goal when he found plenty of space down the left flank and crossed the ball in for Gomez to drill his shot into the back of the net on 41 minutes.

It was Gomez's fourth goal in his last three games for Germany as the Bayern Munich star's purple patch continues having netted 28 goals last season in the Bundesliga.

The hosts scored a consolation goal with time almost up when striker Murad Huseynov stabbed home his shot in the 89th minute after capitalising on a mistake by Germany defender Mats Hummels, who failed to get his header away.

But replacement Andre Schuerrle netted Germany's third deep in added time after fellow sub Mario Goetze split the defence and after Gomez's shot was saved, Schuerrle followed up.

The Germans can wrap up qualification if they beat Austria in Gelsenkirchen on September 2.

The defeat leaves Azerbaijan's German coach Berti Vogts in a precarious position as his side are joint bottom of the table and he was pelted with loo paper at a news conference in Baku on Sunday by angry journalists.

The journalists - some of whom also gave Vogts a pitcher used for post-loo washing in the mainly Muslim country - demanded his resignation after the team's Euro 2012 qualifier defeat to Kazakhstan on Friday.

Despite the insults, Vogts - who guided Germany to the Euro '96 title - said he did not intend to quit, although local media reported that he intended to press charges against the perpetrators and he had body-guards during training this week.

Mexico blames beef for positive tests

Posted June 10, 2011 18:25:00

The Mexican Football Federation claims contaminated meat was the culprit after five players were suspended from the Concacaf Gold Cup for failing a doping test.

The MFF said the players had all tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol from tests carried out in Mexico on May 21, but insists they should be cleared with a second test.

Clenbuterol can be used to speed up and increase muscle mass in animals. A number of athletes, including three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, have blamed their positive test results on eating meat adulterated with the steroid.

Hector Gonzalez, Femexfut's director of national teams, said the players had eaten tainted meat at Mexico's High Performance Centre where the team prepared to defend the Gold Cup.

"Unfortunately, by accident, these players ate beef contaminated with the substance clenbuterol," he told a news conference following Mexico's 5-0 win over Cuba in Group A.

Gonzalez said Mexican farming officials were looking into beef supplies at the centre.

"We're confident that with the investigation that is being carried out we'll be able to clarify (the situation) and reach a happy conclusion," he added.

Femexfut general secretary Decio de Maria earlier named the players as goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, defenders Francisco Rodriguez and Edgar Duenas, and midfielders Antonio Naelson 'Sinha' and Christian Bermudez.

De Maria said the players, who face bans of up to two years, had all been suspended from the tournament.

Gonzalez said the players would fly to Los Angeles on Friday for another test at the University of California Los Angeles's certified laboratory which would "surely be negative".

"We will ask also for the B samples (of the original tests) to be opened and we will await the results," he added.

Neill declares club future lies in Europe

Updated June 6, 2011 19:33:00

Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill has declared his yet-to-be decided club future lies in Europe - and will lean heavily on the advice of national coach Holger Osieck for his next move.

Neill, who says he is fit for Australia's friendly with Serbia on Tuesday, has been released from Turkish club Galatasaray after an 18-month stint.

He is currently looking to secure a new deal elsewhere - having overcome a groin problem which plagued the latter part of his season.

The 33-year-old says he wants to stay in Europe rather than move anywhere else, including the A-League.

"I'm there or thereabouts," Neill said when asked about how close he was to finalising his club future.

"This week's been purely focused on (the Socceroos) and getting my fitness up to where it was.

"Then I'll have two weeks off and I'll start thinking about it.

"I'll also discuss it with the manager (Osieck), talk about the options and which ones he may be able to give me some opinions on.

"For me I still think I've got a lot to offer there (in Europe) and I want to be playing at the highest level possible for me."

Neill has been linked with a move to English Premier League newcomers QPR - a London-based club which may suit the Australian.

He has spent much of his career in London, with stints at Millwall and West Ham.

The Socceroos captain, who missed the New Zealand match in Adelaide, is anxious to play against the world No.16 Serbians - his first game in more than six weeks.

"I'm six weeks from a competitive match, but I think I've done fairly decent training, enough to justify some kind of minutes in the game," Neill said.

"It will be down to the manager's choice."

Osieck said the only player in the squad guaranteed not to play is goalkeeper Nathan Coe.

Neill, who will be 36 by the time of the next World Cup finals, has again pledged he wants to be part of Australia's team for Brazil.

He sees his next club move as pivotal in ensuring his career continues at the top-level until then.

"I see this as a new challenge for myself and I need to pick the right one," he said.

"My goal is to be fit and playing well for the (2014) World Cup. Some of you think I'm too old, but I want to be part of that plan.

"If the manager can assist me with that, then great."

Olyroos hit Singapore for six

Posted June 14, 2011 20:00:00

The Olyroos tuned up for next week's 2012 Olympic qualifiers against Yemen with a 6-0 victory over Singapore's under-23s in Sydney on Tuesday.

In an encouraging performance ahead of the two-legged play-off against Yemen, Aurelio Vidmar's side proved much too strong in the rescheduled training match.

A-League players Kofi Danning, Jason Hoffman, Marko Jesic, Mustafa Amini, Aziz Behich and Scottish-based midfielder Aaron Mooy all found the net, leaving Vidmar satisfied with the hit-out.

"Although the score was a little flattering I was very pleased with the way we played and the intensity that we played at for the whole 90 minutes," the coach said.

"It was also good to see some of the younger players who haven't played much with us to get some valuable game time and they all fitted in very well.

"We will now continue our preparations and really focus on the upcoming matches against Yemen."

While heavy rain forced Sunday's match in Gosford to be called off, conditions were not much better on a dreary day at Blacktown Olympic Park on Tuesday.

But the out-of-contract Danning brightened the mood when he got Australia off to the perfect start in the sixth minute, driving the ball past Singaporean goalkeeper Izwan Bin Mahbud from an acute angle.

St Mirren midfielder Mooy doubled the lead with a neat finish in the 14th minute after he dribbled into the box following a pass from Matthew Foschini.

The Olyroos continued to dominate in the second half and they extended their lead in the 52nd minute when Rocco Visconte set up Hoffman.

Newcastle Jets star Jesic added his name to the scoresheet three minutes later when he unleashed a 25m bomb into the top right-hand corner.

Vidmar made seven changes on the hour mark including Borussia Dortmund target Amini, who needed only nine minutes to get his name on the scoresheet.

The scoring was completed in the final minute of the match when Melbourne Heart youngster Behich took on three defenders down the left side, cut back inside and then carefully placed his shot past the goalkeeper.

The Olyroos face Yemen in Gosford on Sunday with the second leg to be played in Newcastle on Thursday.

The winner of the tie progresses to the next stage of qualification, with teams split into three groups of four.

Cricket star Perry in Matildas Cup squad

Updated June 8, 2011 22:52:00

Australia will send its youngest squad to this month's FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, but one of the Matildas is already a world champion.

Dual international Ellyse Perry was a member of Australia's World Cup-winning Twenty20 women's squad in the Caribbean last year, playing a pivotal role as the Southern Stars defeated New Zealand in the final.

Now the talented 20-year-old is one of the 21-strong Matildas squad preparing to take on the world in Germany and Perry was understandably excited about reaching the pinnacle in both her chosen sports.

"To be given this opportunity is just fantastic for me, purely from the perspective that I absolutely love playing football as much as I love playing cricket," Perry said.

"Having had that experience with cricket and also winning a World Cup, I know how great that is and how enjoyable that is.

"To be involved in this team now, in a football World Cup, is really special and something I'm tremendously excited about."

Having named a squad with an average age just under 22, Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said Perry's tournament experience in cricket would be a benefit to the Matildas as they prepare to tackle Brazil, Norway and Equatorial Guinea in their World Cup group.

"I think that helps in dealing with the pressures you have to deal with at that level but I think playing two high-level sports also helps in a lot of other areas, in relation to decision making, etc," Sermanni said.

"So I think the cricket part of Ellyse's game has really, in some ways, helped her football as well."

Highlighting how busy Perry's life is, she will have to make up two university exams when she returns to Australia but there is no sign of her choosing one sport over the other in the near future.

"The way that I view things is that playing the two sports is what makes me happiest and what helps me to perform as well as I can," she said.

"There's never been that point where I've felt like things were too much or I really needed to make a decision."

Rather, Perry was excited about the prospect of entering an international tournament as an outsider rather than a favourite as she normally is in the cricketing world.

"It'll be interesting to be in that position, not being one of the teams that's hunted or looked at," she said.

"Rather we're the ones that have got the opportunity and freeness to play the football that we want to play and see where it goes."

Controversial striker Lisa De Vanna also earned selection.

De Vanna seemed set to miss out on a spot after being booted out of a Matildas training camp in Gosford in May for disciplinary reasons.

But Sermanni said the 26-year-old has performed well during a Gold Coast training camp and will be in contention for the Cup opener against Brazil on June 30 (AEST).

Matildas World Cup squad: Teigen Allen, Laura Alleway, Melissa Barbieri (c), Tameka Butt, Kim Carroll, Lauren Colthorpe, Lisa De Vanna, Casey Dumont, Caitlin Foord, Heather Garriock, Elise Kellond-Knight, Samantha Kerr, Leena Khamis, Collette Mccallum, Ellyse Perry, Clare Polkinghorne, Sally Shipard, Kyah Simon, Servet Uzunlar, Emily Van Egmond, Lydia Williams.

Liverpool agrees fee for Henderson

Posted June 8, 2011 19:20:00

Premier League club Liverpool has agreed a fee with Sunderland for its England midfielder Jordan Henderson in a deal which British media reported would cost the Merseysiders up to 20 million pounds ($30.8 million).

"A fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Jordan Henderson and he travels to Anfield today with the club's blessing," a Sunderland club spokesman was quoted on the club's official website.

The 20-year-old midfielder, capped once by England in its 2-1 friendly defeat by France last November, looks set to be the first major signing by Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish since the Scot agreed a three-year contract last month.

Henderson has enjoyed a break-through season with Sunderland with a number of strong displays in the centre of midfield leading to his England debut and he is considered one of the country's best prospects.

If he signs, he will compete with Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, Jay Spearing, Christian Poulsen and Jonjo Shelvey for a place in the centre of Liverpool's midfield.

Should the deal be completed, it will be Liverpool's second expensive acquisition from the northeast of England this year following the purchase of striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle United in January.

Henderson will join up with the England under-21 squad later on Wednesday ahead of the European Championships in Demark.

Victory meet Kewell over possible transfer

Updated June 5, 2011 09:16:00

Senior Australian international Harry Kewell is considering an offer to return home and play for A-League club Melbourne Victory, reports said on Sunday.

The former Leeds and Liverpool midfielder, 32, is a free agent after his Turkish club Galatasaray released him for next season.

Kewell's manager, Bernie Mandic, informed Football Federation Australia that Kewell was considering an offer from the Victory after meeting with club officials in Melbourne last week, according to Fairfax reports.

"Yes, we did catch up," Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro confirmed to the newspaper.

"We knew he was a free agent and we were keen to talk with Harry to find out what his next move was.

"We want to reward our members with the best available players, who can represent our club in Australia and throughout Asia."

If he signs, the 53-capped international Kewell would become the club's marquee player, which would make him exempt from Victory's $2.35 million salary cap.

Reports said Kewell would likely command a deal in excess of $2 million.

Mandic said no deal had been finalised with Victory, the A-League's best-supported club.

"You can add Melbourne Victory to a long list of clubs after Harry, which includes the majority of the A-League," Mandic said.

"We're in no hurry and Harry has said he's not thinking about football for the next couple of weeks."

One of the key events was a game that Faith Christian played against the Gainesville State Tornadoes, a school for convicted juvenile offenders. The story of this spectacular game is being made into a movie, titled One Heart, with an anticipated release in November 2010. Reminiscent of Hoosiers and Remember the Titans, this true story makes a strong statement about the impact of compassion and sportsmanship.

Kewell's agent denies Victory move

Posted June 4, 2011 19:05:00

Harry Kewell's manager has denied speculation the Socceroos superstar is poised to sign with A-League club Melbourne Victory.

Rumours were circulating on Saturday the Victory were close to pulling off a giant coup by signing the 32-year-old, who was off contract with Turkish club Galatasaray.

Kewell's manager Bernie Mandic confirmed the Victory were one of several clubs interested in the former Liverpool and Leeds star's services, but insisted no deal had been done.

"You can add Melbourne Victory to a long list of clubs after Harry, which includes the majority of the A-League," Mandic said on Saturday.

"We're in no hurry and Harry has said he's not thinking about football for the next couple of weeks."

Mandic described suggestions Kewell had already signed with the Victory as "absolute rubbish" and said Kewell still had interest from "all over the world".

Kewell is in Melbourne after an advertising photo shoot this week, and it is believed the presence of Victory officials at another public appearance has further fuelled the rumours.

He is not part of the Socceroos squad to face New Zealand in Adelaide on Sunday - one of several key names rested after telling Australian coach Holger Osieck he was not at his best.

Sports Conditioning - Change of Seasons, Change of Sports

When the seasons change, our sports change. Our bodies, our gear, and our exercise conditioning should change, too. Preparing one's muscles for a different sport prevents injuries, enhances recovery from preexisting injuries, and improves performance for the sports to come.

Here in Colorado's Aspen Valley, cyclists are in great form. In the quiet red-rock town of Basalt, cyclists have been enjoying the splendor of riding along the Frying Pan River. For months, they have been fine-tuning their cycling muscles.

But now our attention turns to the slopes of Aspen. In fact, months before the ski resorts open for ski season, locals work on getting their "skiers' legs" on backcountry hillsides.

Cycling to Skiing: comparing Sports Conditioning styles.

Let's use the cycling-skiing comparison to demonstrate the different requirements of these sports on our bodies. First, cyclists work on staying in a tucked position. The muscles on the front of the body that put cyclists in a forward-flexed position are strong and tight. And the positioning of a cyclists' body over their bikes is grossly different than a skier's stance.

Cycling also occurs within a limited space around one's bicycle. Riding efficiently and maintaining balance on a bike requires a rider to tighten around the bike. The goal is to limit the area within which they work; i.e., to minimize their "work-space".

Skiers, on the other hand, are unlikely to be as space-conscious. Their work-space is not so strictly defined. And unless they are competitive speed-skiers, they do not need to practice staying tucked.

For those cyclists who are skiing in the backcountry before the start of ski resort season, their muscles are not conditioned for the change in sports. Backcountry skiing requires a different sense of balance than cycling. The work-space is broader. Obstacles may surround you. Terrain changes radically beneath the skier's feet. The skier must adapt and rebalance continually as they move.

Other conditions affect the transition in seasonal sports. These include: your gear, injuries, your overall physical activity levels, weather and environmental conditions, and participation in other sports.

Sports Injury Prevention.

When changing seasonal sports, your first priority should be to prevent injuries. Before one season ends, you should be conditioning your body for the upcoming sport. You, the athlete, should take 4-8 weeks, minimally, to prepare for the next sport. If you have any preexisting injuries, you may need longer.

If you do not make a physical transition, you are predisposing yourself to injury. It is recommended that you start the next sport at a low physical intensity. Take basic first aid precautions, if necessary. Icing sore muscles and getting aerobic exercise will remove the soreness and speed up recovery.

Recovery.

Taking the time to get physically conditioned for the next sport will aid recovery in two ways. First, it will improve the healing environment so that preexisting injuries may heal. Your injury may be aggravated by your current sport. Or maybe it is not healing in the presence of training for your current sport. Changing your training may allow your injury to rest and heal.

Second, as you start to practice the next sport, being physically prepared will allow your muscles to respond better to their new requirements. You are less likely to become sore from new activities, and less likely to get injured. Your muscles will recover faster. This will make you feel better: energized, stronger, ready to get out and repeat the fun!

Enhanced Athletic Performance.

All of these advantages of pre-conditioning for your sport result in enhanced performance. What is performance, and which of its features can be improved?

Performance means your ability to participate in a sport. It includes your muscles' abilities to perform, or execute, the basic moves of that sport. Performance also refers to how you feel while practicing the sport.

Performance refers to measurable features, too. It might refer to the time requirements of performing the basic activities. It might refer to the level of difficulty in executing certain moves. It might refer to the fluidity, creativity, or elements of artistic expression revealed through "sporting display".

If you practice your sport for fun and recreation, then enhancing performance may just mean that you end the day without injuries or feeling wrecked! Improving performance means "More Play-time"!

If you are a competitor within your sport, you probably already know the need for pre-conditioning, and you practice it seasonally.

Starting a pre-Conditioning program.

When you plan to condition for your upcoming sport, consider all of the factors described above. How are the sports different? What condition is your body in? Do you have any injuries? What does performance mean to you?

Hiring a personal fitness trainer or a sport-specific coach can make the transition easier. They can also make it more fun. They may motivate you to have your best season ever! And also, they have the coaching tools to make those athletic dreams come true!

In conclusion, seasonal sports pre-conditioning is an effective way to prevent injuries, treat injuries you already have, aid recovery as you change sports, and enhance athletic performance for the new sport.

Maradona takes aim at FIFA, Blatter

Posted June 5, 2011 11:02:00

Diego Maradona took aim at FIFA and its president Sepp Blatter, saying football was corrupt and had to put its house in order.

"Things are neither clear nor clean in the world of football right now and many people recognise this reality," asserted the Argentinian World Cup winner during a press conference in Dubai, where he has taken on a two-year coaching contract with local outfit Al-Wasl.

FIFA has been mired in months of corruption allegations but Blatter has managed to rise above the storm and on Wednesday won a landslide vote to be re-elected unopposed as the head of world football's governing body following the withdrawal of Asian football chief Mohamed bin Hammam, suspended amid claims of bribery.

Maradona, who has enjoyed his own share of negative headlines owing to past drug-related suspensions, says he is unimpressed with the game's rulers.

"Every day we see more corruption and manipulation of matches," charged the 50-year-old who helped Argentina to the 1986 World Cup on a day which saw reports emerge of alleged matchfixing on a friendly international between his own country and Nigeria amid claims of unusual betting patterns.

Asked if he backed Blatter's campaign to reform FIFA and its decision-making processes Maradona, sacked last year as Argentina coach, said: "I do not support anybody but I love football. I do not like those who are corrupt and who engage in corruption and I do not support them."

He added that in the past he had turned down offers to play some role in the FIFA "family".

Maradona asked: "What is this family that they speak of? None of them has ever played football. And when they are at the helm they make a multitude of wrong and stupid mistakes. They don't ask our opinion or advice to promote football," Maradona added.

And he insisted that "we will carry on our fight to get these people to quit FIFA. I ask them to leave.

"(But) Blatter is not going to resign. Let us not be under any illusions, nothing is going to change. Unfortunately, we have a big museum to FIFA - dinosaurs who do not want to leave power," Maradona summed up.

On his new challenge to bring success to 2010 Gulf Champions League winners Al-Wasl, currently fourth in the table and 16 points adrift of champions-elect Al-Jazira, Maradona insisted that reports of a 10 million dollar contract were exaggerated.

"We're a long way off that figure - these days the big contracts go to the players, not the coaches."

Match-fixing probe

Meanwhile, FIFA has confirmed Argentina's 4-1 friendly defeat to Nigeria is being investigated for possible match-fixing.

"FIFA can confirm that this match between Nigeria and Argentina was one that we had an active interest in, and forms part of a wider ongoing FIFA investigation," FIFA said in a statement.

"In particular, FIFA will be working closely with colleagues at the FIFA early warning system."

The match, played in Abuja on Wednesday, is by far the highest profile to come under suspicion. Argentina's goal came from a soft penalty awarded in the seventh minute of injury-time.

Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football

Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football
Jim Dent, author of the New York Times bestselling The Junction Boys, returns with his most powerful story of human courage and determination.

More than a century ago, a school was constructed in Fort Worth, Texas, for the purpose of housing and educating the orphans of Texas Freemasons. It was a humble project that for years existed quietly on a hillside east of town. Life at the Masonic Home was about to change, though, with the arrival of a lean, bespectacled coach by the name of Rusty Russell. Here was a man who could bring rain in the midst of a drought. Here was a man who, in virtually no time at all, brought the orphans' story into the homes of millions of Americans.
In the 1930s and 1940s, there was nothing bigger in Texas high school football than the Masonic Home Mighty Mites--a group of orphans bound together by hardship and death. These youngsters, in spite of being outweighed by at least thirty pounds per man, were the toughest football team around. They began with nothing--not even a football--yet in a few years were playing for the state championship on the highest level of Texas football. This is a winning tribute to a courageous band of underdogs from a time when America desperately needed fresh hope and big dreams.
The Mighty Mites remain a notable moment in the long history of American sports. Just as significant is the depth of the inspirational message. This is a profound lesson in fighting back and clinging to faith. The real winners in Texas high school football were not the kids from the biggest schools, or the ones wearing the most expensive uniforms. They were the scrawny kids from a tiny orphanage who wore scarred helmets and faded jerseys that did not match, kids coached by a devoted man who lived on peanuts and drove them around in a smoke-belching old truck.
In writing a story of unforgettable characters and great football, Jim Dent has come forward to reclaim his place as one of the top sports authors in America today.
A remarkable and inspirational story of an orphanage and the man who created one of the greatest football teams Texas has ever known . . . this is their story--the original Friday Night Lights.

"This just might be the best sports book ever written. Jim Dent has crafted a story that will go down as one of the most artistic, one of the most unforgettable, and one of the most inspirational ever. Twelve Mighty Orphans will challenge Hoosiers as the feel-good sports story of our lifetime. Naturally, being from Texas, I am biased. Hooray for the Mighty Mites.''
--Verne Lundquist, CBS Sports

"Coach Rusty Russell and the Mighty Mites will steal your heart as they overcome every obstacle imaginable to become a respected football team. Take an orphanage, the Depression, and mix it with Texas high school football, and Jim Dent has authored another winner, this one about the ultimate underdog.''
--Brent Musburger, ABC Sports/ESPN

"No state has a roll call of legendary high school football stories like we do in Texas, and, admittedly, some of those stories have been 'expanded' over the years when it comes to the truth. But let Jim Dent tell you about the Mighty Mites of Masonic Home, the pride of Fort Worth in the dark days of the Depression. Read this book. You will think it's fiction. You will think it's a Hollywood script. But Twelve Mighty Orphans is the truth, and nothing but. It is powerful stuff. Some eighty years later, the Mighty Mites' story remains so sacred, not even a Texan would dare tamper with these facts. And Jim Dent tells it like it was."

Kennedy double sinks All Whites

Updated June 5, 2011 20:12:00

Towering striker Josh Kennedy scored twice on his Socceroos return as a virtual second-string Australia side proved too strong for New Zealand in a 3-0 win at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Kennedy, back in the national side for the first time in eight months after missing January's Asian Cup due to injury, struck in the ninth and 59th minutes in the international friendly played in front of 21,281 fans who braved at times torrential rain.

Young gun James Troisi completed the rout in injury time in front of his hometown crowd, slotting a penalty for his first international goal after Robbie Kruse was cut down in the box.

Missing big guns including Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell and Mark Schwarzer, Socceroos coach Holger Osieck used the match as an opportunity to test a host of fringe players.

And while they did not set the world on fire, they were always in control against a New Zealand side, injury-ravaged and coming off a brutal turnaround following a 3-0 loss to Mexico on Thursday in Denver.

Goalkeeper Nathan Coe, Troisi, Neil Kilkenny, Michael Zullo, Matthew Spiranovic and Jon McKain were all handed rare starts and performed well, with Troisi particularly impressive in a 90-minute performance.

Kruse, Rhys Williams, Dario Vidosic and Alex Brosque all came off the bench in the second half, as first team regulars Luke Wilkshire, Brett Holman and stand-in captain Brett Emerton were substituted at half-time with an eye to Tuesday's clash with Serbia in Melbourne.

Kennedy had said during the week he felt he had to prove himself to Osieck, having only played one match under the German coach, and gave a good account of himself in a 60-minute performance.

His first goal was gift-wrapped from the Kiwis, pouncing after goalkeeper Glen Moss lost control of a questionable Jeremy Brockie backpass and steering the ball into an open net.

He should have made it two just after half-time, when Vidosic played him into the clear, but he smashed over the bar from close range.

He made amends a short time later though, claiming his ninth international goal with a trademark header from a pinpoint Vidosic corner.

As Osieck took the chance to inject fresh faces throughout the second half, Australia continued to threaten in attack with Kruse, Brosque, Vidosic and Troisi combining well.

The Socceroos' reward came when Kruse was cut down by Ben Sigmund deep into injury time and Troisi was allowed the spot kick for a crowd-pleasing finish.

The All Whites were not totally disgraced, particularly considering their troubled build-up, but rarely threatened on goal aside from half chances to Kosta Barbarouses, Shane Smeltz and Chris Wood.

Neill was left on the bench due to a groin problem but was expected to take part against Serbia, along with usual centre back partner Sasa Ognenovski.

Australia: 3 (J Kennedy 10', 59, J Troisi 90+3')

New Zealand: 0

Below-par England salvages Swiss draw

Updated June 5, 2011 07:36:00

Stuttering England was held to a 2-2 draw at home by Switzerland in its Euro 2012 qualifier while Russia's stand-in striker Roman Pavlyuchenko grabbed a hat-trick to secure a 3-1 win against Armenia.

Portugal beat Norway 1-0 to move top of Group H level on points with its opponents and Denmark who won 2-0 in Iceland.

England was only spared the indignity of losing top spot in Group G to Montenegro because the team from the tiny Balkan state also had to settle for a home draw, 1-1 against Bulgaria, after conceding its first goal in the group.

A routine 3-1 win over Malta kept Greece top of Group F while Israel stayed in the hunt by beating Latvia for the second time in three months, this time winning 2-1 away.

Pavlyuchenko, who last month criticised Russia coach Dick Advocaat's team selection, was only in the starting lineup after leading scorer Alexander Kerzhakov suffered a knee injury.

Armenia, who had held Russia 0-0 at home, took a shock lead through Brazilian-born striker Marcos Pizzelli in the 25th minute to stun the St Petersburg crowd.

But Pavlyuchenko volleyed Russia level within a minute to steady the nerves, made it 2-1 just before the hour and sealed the points with a 73rd minute penalty.

"Of course, I'm quite happy with the outcome but not how we played," said Advocaat.

"We had no margin for error in this match as we could not afford to lose any points. This made us look nervous."

Top trio

Russia is among three teams in the group on 13 points from six matches after Ireland beat Macedonia 2-0 with a Robbie Keane double - his 50th and 51st goals for his country - and Slovakia scraped a 1-0 win at home to bottom team Andorra.

Defender Miroslav Karhan, Slovakia's most capped player with 103 appearances, volleyed home in the second half to give his side its fourth 1-0 win in the campaign.

At Wembley, Tranquillo Barnetta scored twice against England direct from freekicks in the space of three minutes just after the half hour, helped by woeful goalkeeping from Joe Hart and equally poor defending by the home side.

Frank Lampard pulled one back with a 37th minute penalty, substitute Ashley Young levelled six minutes into the second half and England missed several good chances to win the game.

"I am disappointed we didn't win after being 2-0 up but I will not reprimand the team," said Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld following the first game since the international retirement of record scorer Alexander Frei.

"I was pleased with the result in the end."

England have 11 points from five games, ahead of Montenegro on goal difference, with Switzerland and Bulgaria six points adrift.

Superb goal

Montenegro, which failed to win a game in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, looked set to go top when Radomir Djalovic volleyed them in front in the 53rd minute in Podgorica but Bulgaria striker Ivelin Popov equalised midway through the second half.

A superbly-taken goal by Helder Postiga, sweeping home Nani's cross with a first-time shot on the turn in the 53rd minute, gave Portugal its third successive win in Group H as it continued its recovery from a poor start.

Portugal, beaten 1-0 by Norway in September, dominated but struggled to break down the visitors' defence with all-time La Liga top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo unable to make his mark.

Second-half goals from Lasse Schone and Christian Eriksen gave Denmark a 2-0 win in Iceland to leave them on 10 points with leaders Portugal and third-placed Norway after five games.

Forward Giannis Fetfatzidis, 20, scored twice for Greece and 19-year-old Kyriakos Papadopoulos, making his debut, notched the other to leave them on 14 points from six games, one more than Croatia and Israel who both won their weekend matches 2-1.

Osieck urges youngsters to have a crack

Posted June 4, 2011 17:26:00

Australian coach Holger Osieck has thrown down the gauntlet to his fringe players, urging them to use Sunday's clash with New Zealand to prove they should be Socceroos regulars.

While Sunday's match at Adelaide Oval and a clash with Serbia in Melbourne on Tuesday are friendlies by name, they will not be by nature, with the German coach confirming he will use them to see if a host of new faces are up to Socceroos standard ahead of the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign in September.

Osieck confirmed former Brisbane Roar winger Michael Zullo would start at left back against the All Whites and local product James Troisi would at least see some game time, while several others without significant international experience would get opportunities as the squad was carefully managed with two games in three days.

"There is a couple of new faces in the group and I'm really eager to see the boys that we have on the radar and have monitored over the last couple of months, see whether they are really up to date and in a position to help our team do a good job for the Socceroos," Osieck said.

"I'm looking for the players who can step up and be a regular member of the Socceroos. That's a great incentive for everybody.

"Looking back at the start of my job, one aspect of my mandate was to bring fresh blood into the group to rejuvenate the team.

"If you look back from game one and to today, a lot of players that hadn't been considered or that had been fringe so far have become regulars in the team. They have really enriched our team and have raised the level of the group."

With a host of first team regulars missing including Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer, Harry Kewell and David Carney, Osieck will field a new-look line-up in Adelaide.

He said goalkeeper Adam Federici would be saved for the Serbia game, after joining the camp late following Reading's promotion play-off loss, paving the way for Nathan Coe or Mitch Langerak to play a full match.

Captain Lucas Neill remained in doubt with a groin injury, with Osieck indicating he was unlikely to start in Adelaide, giving Jon McKain or Matthew Spiranovic a chance to start - possibly both if Sasa Ognenovski was also rested.

Brett Emerton would likely take the captain's armband in Neill's absence.

Rhys Williams, Neil Kilkenny, Alex Brosque and Dario Vidosic were others in line for game time, as Osieck weighed up whether to save some of his bigger names for the match against 2010 World Cup group opponents Serbia.

"It's going to be tough for one individual to play two games over 90 minutes, that's for sure," Osieck said.

"I want to have a good look at everybody. On the other hand, the public - they ask for the players who are a bit more popular than others - so I have to find the right balance."

The German dismissed talk his side could find the going easy against an injury-ravaged and travel-weary New Zealand side, having only arrived in Adelaide on Saturday after a 3-0 loss on Thursday to Mexico in Denver.

"I heard a lot of things regarding New Zealand and the team and I don't like to listen to that, that is all crap," Osieck said.

"You are only tired when you talk about it."

Recreational Sport - Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure Sport

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don't like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one's disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don't. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.
