Coach Tom Sermanni said in a statement that De Vanna would return to her club side in the United States immediately but did not say what the gifted striker had done wrong.
"Unfortunately Lisa couldn't adhere to some of the team's non-negotiable behaviour parameters and we have had to make a decision for the benefit of the entire squad," he said.
Australia plays game two of its series against New Zealand in Gosford today after recording a 3-0 win in game one on Thursday.
De Vanna's dumping is a major shock for the Matildas, who are preparing for next month's FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
They had already lost leading striker Kate Gill for the tournament with a knee ligament injury.
De Vanna is a proven force at international level who netted four goals at the 2007 World Cup.
