Ferguson casts envious eye at rivals

Posted April 26, 2011 07:05:00

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted overnight that Manchester United's push for Champions League glory is fired by a desire to make ground on their more decorated European rivals.

United tackles Schalke in Gelsenkirchen in the first leg of their semi-final, in a bid to reach what would be its third final in the space of four years.

The three-time champions are seasoned operators on the European stage and have yet to lose in this season's competition, but Ferguson says they still have ground to make up in the silverware stakes.

"The present group has enough experience in Europe now. I think it's where we should be," said the United coach at his pre-match press conference.

"My expectation has always been high in regard to the European scene. You do get envious of other clubs' records in Europe and we're trying to get to parity with those clubs: Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Liverpool.

"We need to progress quickly to get to that level again."

United, eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Bayern last season, will be appearing in the semi-finals of Europe's premier cup tournament for the 12th time, while Schalke are novices at this stage of the competition.

Ferguson's side are therefore strong favourites to reach the Wembley decider on May 28, but the Scot says past experience suggests they are in for a bumpy ride.

"You always get apprehensive at this stage of the competition," he said.

"We've had the same situation over the years, when we played Juventus (in 1998-99). There was apprehension in the first game at home (1-1) but we released that in the second leg (3-2).

"It was the same with Barcelona (in 2007-08). We got the result we wanted at home (a 1-0 win after a 0-0 draw in the away leg) but the last few minutes were agony.

"You run the full gamut of emotion in Champions League semi-finals, because it's never easy."

Despite their relative lack of experience, Schalke go into the game on the back of an astonishing 7-3 aggregate demolition of holders Inter Milan in the quarter-finals and Ferguson was fulsome in his praise of their exploits.

"They never looked like losing the game," he said.

"That's quite a credit to them in terms of their experience against Inter Milan. Never at any stage did I think they'd lose."

United is currently six points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat of Everton last Saturday and Ferguson said the team had been buoyed by the returns from injury of several key players.

"What's important is the freshness that has come back into the team in recent weeks," he said.

"(Antonio) Valencia, (Rio) Ferdinand, Anderson, Park (Ji-Sung)... It sometimes happens that way.

"Big competitions come along and you find all your players are fit. It gives you a selection problem, but you're glad to have them."

Striker Dimitar Berbatov did not make the trip to Germany due to a groin strain and Darren Fletcher is not yet fully fit after a virus, but right-back Rafael has returned from a knee problem to give Ferguson a near full squad.

In Berbatobv's absence, Wayne Rooney is likely to continue his fruitful partnership with Javier Hernandez, whose 83rd-minute header brought victory against Everton.

"Good players create their own platform in terms of the importance of their performances," said Ferguson.

"Wayne knows performance will always be what he's judged on. There's so much expectation on the boy. But he's stepped up to the mark for that; no-one else has done it (for him)."

Tuesday's game at Veltins Arena will see Rooney return to the scene of his sending off for England against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, but Ferguson said it would not affect him.

"You have to put bad moments behind you and try to do better. It's a normal thing for any footballer. I wasn't aware it was in Gelsenkirchen. I actually didn't see that game."

Dzeko scores as City sinks Rovers

Updated April 26, 2011 07:30:00

Edin Dzeko's first Premier League goal earned Manchester City a 1-0 win over Blackburn on Tuesday morning which strengthened his team's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

City was heading for a disappointing draw against its relegation-threatened hosts when substitute Dzeko, who had only been on the pitch three minutes, finished well after the Rovers defence failed to clear a dangerous ball by David Silva in the 75th minute.

It sent City four points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham in the race for the Champions League and increased Blackburn's relegation worries.

Rovers will feel hard done by but they have now won just three times in 17 league attempts under manager Steve Kean.

This was hardly a vintage City performance but Roberto Mancini's side are now clear favourites to clinch the fourth and final Champions League spot.

They could even overtake fast-fading Arsenal, which currently occupies third, after moving to within five points of Arsene Wenger's side with a game in hand.

Since its previous appearance on the Premier League stage, a miserable 3-0 defeat at Liverpool, City has closed in on its first piece of major silverware for 35 years by reaching the FA Cup final.

And Mancini kept faith with the team that overcame neighbours Manchester United in the semi-final as City looked to end a three-match losing run on the road in the league.

Blackburn, which started just above the relegation zone, desperately needed a win after taking just four points out of a possible 27.

Yet Rovers almost found themselves behind as early as the third minute when Spanish international Silva let fly with a sweetly-struck left-foot volley which crashed against the post with keeper Paul Robinson beaten.

Robinson was almost embarrassed by Aleksandar Kolarov in the 10th minute, the Serbian full-back's speculative 35-yard effort dipping narrowly wide of the target.

With its 10-season stay in the top-tier in jeopardy, Blackburn, which recalled former City striker Benjani Mwaruwari to the side, needed to seize the initiative.

But despite claims for a penalty after Vincent Kompany's challenge on Jason Roberts, they lacked the cutting edge to seriously trouble City keeper Joe Hart.

His biggest test in a first half of few chances came from David Dunn's 31st minute free kick which posed few problems for the England keeper.

However, City survived a major 41st minute scare when Blackburn defender Chris Samba outjumped both Kolarov and Gareth Barry to connect with Michel Salgado's cross to power a header just wide.

Whatever Mancini said to his players at half-time appeared to have an impact as the visitors came close to breaking the deadlock inside the opening minute of the second half.

Silva, who was at the heart of his team's best moves, clipped in a cross from the left for Yaya Toure whose header was tipped over the bar by Robinson.

But Blackburn's poor start was a distant memory when Martin Olsson volleyed into the side-netting after Brett Emerton's cross flashed off the head of Jason Roberts into the path of the advancing Swede.

But a game lacking in real quality was settled 15 minutes from time when Dzeko, making his 10th league appearance since joining for 27 million pounds ($41.55m) from Wolfsburg in January, let fly from 10-yards after Silva's shot was cleared into his path.

Own-goal pushes Almeria closer to drop

Posted April 26, 2011 10:07:00

An own goal by keeper Diego Alves gave Real Zaragoza a 1-0 win over Almeria which moved it out of the relegation zone but left its opponents firmly rooted to the foot of La Liga.

Both teams went into the game on the back of poor runs but the situation was more worrying for bottom side Almeria which had lost its last four games.

Zaragoza was creating the better openings but in-form keeper Alves was blocking everything that came at him.

Braulio Rodriguez and Ander Herrera had several good chances saved by the Brazilian shot stopper.

Angel Lafita then shot weakly with just the keeper to beat and Nicolas Bertolo was denied by the post.

Eventually Zaragoza found the back of the net in the 70th minute but it was thanks to a dose of misfortune that Alves did not deserve.

A Gabi Fernandez shot came back off the woodwork and hit the shoulder of the keeper before going in.

Almeria almost equalised but Carlos Garcia hit the post and the result means it is now 10 points from safety with five games to go.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are fully focused on their Champions League semi-final after both sides won at the weekend to maintain the Catalan side's eight-point lead at the top of the table.

David Villa got the opener for Barcelona against Osasuna to end an 11-match goal drought while Lionel Messi became the first player to hit 50 goals in a Spanish season when he scored the other in a 2-0 win.

Real warmed up for Wednesday's clasico with a 6-3 thrashing of Valencia.

Gonzalo Higuain will be looking to force his way into the side after he bagged a hat-trick while Kaka also scored twice and Karim Benzema got the other.

Dzeko backed to spearhead City's Euro push

Posted April 26, 2011 19:34:00

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini backed Edin Dzeko to become a regular scorer after the forward hit his first Premier League goal.

Dzeko's second-half strike gave City a 1-0 win over struggling Blackburn and a four-point lead over Tottenham in the race to secure the fourth and final qualifying place for next season's Champions League.

"It will do his confidence the power of good," said Mancini of a player who had failed to find the target since his move from German side Wolfsburg in January.

"Edin is a fantastic striker. He had some problems because he hasn't played more games in the past and had some difficulties because he didn't score.

"But he deserved to score what was a very important goal for us. Yes, I have had to speak to him. It has not been easy for him because he hasn't been playing and he hasn't scored in the league.

"For a striker it's difficult when he cannot score."

Dzeko, who scored after coming on as a second-half substitute, was delighted with breaking his Premier League goal duck.

"I'm very happy that this goal helped my team to win the game," he said.

"Sometimes it's difficult. I'm not the first who didn't make the best start but I'm happy because I scored and helped the team."

The end of Dzeko's drought came just just two days after Chelsea's multi-million pound signing Fernando Torres had finally opened his Blues account against West Ham.

"Torres scored a lot of goals at Liverpool and changed clubs, I'm happy for him too because I know what the pressure is," he said.

"Now we have to look at the future - it is a new beginning for me and for City."

Mancini wants City to qualify for the Champions League in style by winning all five of their remaining Premier League games.

City and fifth-placed Tottenham will meet at Eastlands on May 10 in what could be a crucial game.

But Mancini hopes to have secured the club's Champions League spot by then after targeting five wins out of five between now and the end of the season.

"We have another five games and we shall try to win all five," said the City manager.

"Tottenham at this moment are four points behind us but every game is difficult and anything can happen."

Blackburn manager Steve Kean heads into Saturday's home game with Bolton with some trepidation.

It was a 2-1 defeat at north west rivals Bolton back in December which cost Sam Allardyce his job and the relegation alarm bells are already ringing at Ewood Park.

Blackburn, one point above the bottom three, are now without a win in 10 attempts in the league.

"At this stage every single point is difficult to get," said Kean.

"What will happen if we drop into the bottom three? Psychologically it will be tough to take. But I think we have got a good group with lots of strong characters."

Hernandez late show boosts United

Posted April 24, 2011 00:02:00

Manchester United moved nine points clear at the top of the English Premier League as Javier Hernandez's late goal clinched a crucial 1-0 win over Everton.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side found it tough to break down a resolute Everton defence and looked in danger of dropping two points at Old Trafford, but Mexican striker Hernandez ended the stalemate with a far post header seven minutes from full-time.

Hernandez's winner piles the pressure back onto title rivals Chelsea and Arsenal, which both trail United by nine points.

With a Champions League semi-final first leg clash against Schalke looming on Wednesday morning (AEST), Ferguson rested Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick.

United still dominated the first half and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard made two good saves to frustrate Hernandez.

Everton, which had not won at Old Trafford since 1992, felt aggrieved that referee Peter Walton did not give a penalty early in the second half when Rio Ferdinand tugged back Victor Anichebe.

David Moyes' men almost snatched the lead when Jack Rodwell's long-range effort forced a sprawling save from Edwin Van der Sar.

United was struggling to breach Everton's defence. Even when it got through, Fabio da Silva's cross was turned onto a post by Toffees defender Sylvain Distin.

But the home side finally made the breakthrough in the 83rd minute when Antonio Valencia's cross to the far post was headed in by Hernandez from virtually on the goal-line.

Torres breaks Chelsea duck at last

Updated April 24, 2011 07:12:00

Fernando Torres finally scored his first goal for Chelsea as the champions beat West Ham United 3-0 to remain six points behind Manchester United after the leaders had beaten Everton 1-0.

The Spaniard came off the bench to score Chelsea's second six minutes from time - his first goal in his 14th appearance for the west London club he joined from Liverpool for 50 million pounds ($76.87 million) in January.

"I have had 14 games waiting for a goal, which was not the beginning I was expecting when I signed for a massive team like this," Torres told the BBC.

"There will be less pressure on me now. Now we can try and finish the season as we all want."

It was a great response by Chelsea in the title race after a late header by Mexico striker Javier Hernandez ended Everton's resistance six minutes from time at Old Trafford and briefly put United nine points ahead.

United, who visit Schalke 04 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, have 73 points to the 67 of Chelsea.

Third-placed Arsenal, which travels to Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, has 64.

Manchester City, which visits Blackburn Rovers on Monday, is fourth on 56 ahead of Tottenham Hotspur with 55 after Spurs could only draw 2-2 at home with West Bromwich Albion.

Sixth-placed Liverpool is now only three points further back after thrashing Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield, helped by a Maxi Rodriguez hat-trick.

Dire record

Everton was unbeaten in seven league games going into the match at Old Trafford but its record at the ground is dire, with their last win coming in 1992.

It was unable to end that drought on Saturday, although, well-organised and hard-working in defence, the Toffees kept United at arm's length for much of a sweltering afternoon.

United, beaten in the FA Cup semi-finals by Manchester City last weekend and held 0-0 at Newcastle United on Tuesday, cranked up the pressure in the last 15 minutes.

They got their reward when Hernandez rose well to meet an Antonio Valencia cross and power in his point-blank header.

United have now won 16 and drawn one of their 17 home league games.

Victories in their next two league matches would secure the title with two games to spare but they are unlikely to be easy - away to Arsenal and at home to Chelsea.

"Today's game was tricky. Everton are very resilient and some of their defending was fantastic," United manager Alex Ferguson told the club's website.

"We had shots blocked near the line, some misses and the goalkeeper made two or three great saves. You say to yourself: 'It's going to be another late one here'. You can just smell the history of the club and so it was to be."

The day's scorching heat was replaced by a thunderstorm for the evening game at Stamford Bridge and for long periods Chelsea struggled to cope with the awkward conditions and some spirited play by its lowly London rivals.

Chelsea grabbed the first goal at the end of the first half when Frank Lampard banged in a low cross from Ashley Cole.

Centre back David Luiz rattled the bar with a 25-metre piledriver before Torres came off the bench in the 76th minute and, eight minutes later, swept in his first goal.

The Spaniard, who was mobbed by every one of his team-mates, then set up Florent Malouda for the third.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said it had been a perfect day.

"Everyone expected Fernando to score and finally he scored and for him from today will be a new life," he told ESPN.

Robinho sends Milan eight points clear

Posted April 24, 2011 08:51:00

AC Milan took a giant step towards its first Serie A title in seven years when a late Robinho strike gave the Rossoneri a 1-0 win at Brescia and an eight-point lead with four games to go.

While Milan marched on, champions and city rivals Inter Milan beat Lazio 2-1 to move up to second place, ahead of Napoli which lost by the same score at Palermo, while Bari were relegated.

AS Roma beat Chievo Verona 1-0 to consolidate sixth place and close in on Udinese, three points ahead, and fourth-placed Lazio.

Sent clean through by Antonio Cassano, Robinho finished coolly eight minutes from time to give Milan a hard-earned win over relegation-threatened Brescia, which is now five points from safety.

Cassano should have given Milan the lead four minutes before the break when he somehow nodded over from eight metres after being picked out by Kevin-Prince Boateng's cross.

He missed another gilt-edged chance in the second half, heading badly wide after brilliant skill from Clarence Seedorf.

Milan had goalkeeper Christian Abbiati to thank for late saves from Alessandro Diamanti, whose swerving free kick struck the bar with 10 minutes to go.

"We should have finished them off in the first half," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri told Sky Italia.

"There's nothing to celebrate yet, but we'll have a nice Easter."

Inter win

At the San Siro, Inter came back from a goal and a man down to defeat Lazio.

The Nerazzurri made a lacklustre start and were reduced to 10 men after 22 minutes when Julio Cesar was sent off for bringing down Mauro Zarate, who scored from the resultant penalty.

Wesley Sneijder then equalised with a free kick five minutes before half-time and Samuel Eto'o scored the winner, his 20th goal of the season, on 53 minutes after rounding goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

A dispirited Lazio also ended the match with 10 men after skipper Stefano Mauri was sent off on 66 minutes.

"I'm an optimist and I still think it (the title race) is open," Inter coach Leonardo told Italy's Sky channel before the Milan result.

"We had one bad week in four months which can happen. It was an amazing win and showed just how committed this squad is."

Edinson Cavani gave Napoli a second-minute lead with a penalty, his 26th goal of the campaign, against his former club but Palermo hit back through Federico Balzaretti on 38 minutes.

Home coach Delio Rossi was sent from the dugout as tempers flared but Cesare Bovo's penalty on the stroke of half-time after Giulio Migliaccio had been felled in the box turned out to be the winner for Palermo, who stayed eighth.

Napoli slipped to third, nine points behind Milan.

"The boys were a bit tense," said Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri.

"We're not used to being so high up the table and some players are able to handle the pressure better than others."

Fifth-placed Udinese failed to take advantage of Lazio's loss, losing 2-0 at home to Parma with an Amauri double giving the visitors three precious points to go 14th.

The Brazilian had already opened the scoring by the time Gokhan Inler was sent off for a second caution on 21 minutes, and added his second in stoppage time.

Bari was relegated after a second-half penalty from Nicola Pozzi gave struggling Sampdoria a 1-0 win in Puglia that lifted it level with third-from-bottom Lecce on 35 points. Lecce lost 4-2 in Genoa.

Cesena climbed two points clear of the drop zone after goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Dominique Malonga helped the Serie A newcomers to a crucial 2-0 win at Bologna.

In a dramatic finale to the late game between seventh-placed Juventus and lowly Catania, Francesco Lodi curled in an exquisite free kick to give the Sicilian side a 95th-minute equaliser and dent Juve's European challenge.

An Alessandro Del Piero brace had put the Bianconeri in control at half-time but Catania, now two points clear of the relegation zone, hit back through Alejandro Gomez nine minutes from time before Lodi's late finish to make it 2-2.

Messi sets 50-goal mark

Posted April 24, 2011 09:10:00

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi became the first player to score 50 goals in a Spanish season as Barcelona and arch-rivals Real Madrid both triumphed ahead of their mouth-watering Champions League duel.

Messi reached his latest landmark when he found the target three minutes from time in his team's 2-0 win over Osasuna as Barcelona maintained their eight-point lead at the top of La Liga.

He had already equalled the previous best mark of 49 goals scored by Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas when he netted in the 1-1 draw against Real last weekend.

Now Messi has 31 goals in the league and nine in the Champions League after finishing with seven in the King's Cup and three in the Spanish Supercup.

Elsewhere Real crushed Valencia 6-3 to set the foundation for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg clash at the Bernabeu.

In midweek, Barca's hopes of a treble had come to an end when Real beat them 1-0 in the King's Cup final, but coach Pep Guardiola shrugged it off saying that the league is their main priority.

However, ahead of another 'clasico' in Europe, Guardiola chose to leave the likes of Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta on the bench against Osasuna.

The impressive Jeffren Isaias supplied the 24th minute cross for Spain international David Villa to end one of his worst spells in front of goal when he fired passed the keeper after having gone 11 matches and two months without scoring.

In the second half Barca tightened up and substitute Messi came on to secure the three points and his place in the record books.

"It wasn't a very strong performance from us. Osasuna are always a difficult team and we had players who don't play that often. It was important for Villa to get his goal to boost his confidence," said Guardiola.

Looking ahead to the game with Real he added: "If we go to the Bernabeu aiming to defend they will take advantage. We need to go and score goals even though we have problems with injuries. At the moment not many people would back us as Madrid are playing a lot better".

A second-string Real side romped to a 6-3 win over Valencia.

Coach Jose Mourinho fielded just Iker Casillas and Ricardo Carvalho from the side which beat Barcelona in the final of the King's Cup as he also looked to rest his players.

Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain made the most of his opportunity with a hat-trick while Brazilian star Kaka grabbed a brace.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring when the keeper failed to reach a Higuain pass and the Frenchman slotted passed two defenders on the line.

Higuain then slipped the ball home while defender Jeremy Mathieu dawdled in possession.

Still before half-time Kaka and Higuain netted from crosses with the Valencia defence again ball watching.

After the break Valencia was a little better with Higuain completing a hat-trick before Roberto Saldado finally got the home side on the score sheet.

A piece of quality from Kaka saw him finish clinically after nutmegging a defender and then Valencia gave some respectability to the scoreline with goals from Jonas Goncalves and Jordi Alba.

"We want to finish the season well and with the feeling that we are capable of winning in any stadium. Our aim is that Barca win the league with the points they pick up and not those that we give away," said Mourinho.

"This is a competition in which we aren't favourites but after winning a trophy, we have won well here and played spectacular football.

"We did our job and have had two very tough games after each other."

Athletic Bilbao boosted its European hopes with a 2-1 win in a hard-fought Basque derby against Real Sociedad.

It is now five points clear of sixth-placed Sevilla thanks to goals from Iker Muniain and Gaizka Toquero.

Football Triple Feature (The Longest Yard / North Dallas Forty / Necessary Roughness)

Football Triple Feature (The Longest Yard / North Dallas Forty / Necessary Roughness)Longest Yard - In this rough-and tumble movie, actually filmed on-location at the Georgia State Prison, the cons are the heroes and the guards are the heavies. Eddie Albert is the sadistic warden who'll gladly make any sacrifice to push his guards' semi-pro football team to the national championship. Burt Reynolds plays one-time pro quarterback Paul Crewe, now behind bars for leading State Police on a wild chase in a "borrowed car" and more. He agrees to organize a prisoners' team to play the guards. The warden intercedes to assure that his goon squad will meet only passive resistance from Crewe's "Mean Machine." But the license to pound on their hated guards is a big incentive for murderers and thieves to learn strategy. North Dallas Forty - In a society in which major league sporting events have replaced Sunday worship as the religion of choice, North Dallas Forty appears like a desecration at the altar. In this film, directed by Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz), the National Football League is revealed to be more about the money than the game. Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Spradlin) and team owner Conrad Hunter (Steve Forrest). Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. His teammates include savvy quarterback Maxwell (Mac Davis) and lunk-headed defensive lineman Jo Bob Priddy (Bo Svenson), who deal with the impersonality and back-biting of the game through off-field diversions. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves. Necessary Roughness - The Texas State Armadillos are fourth down and nowhere-to-go after a corruption scandal nearly ends the football program. Now upstanding coach Ed Gennero (Hector Elizondo) must put together a brand-new team. For the position of quarterback, Gennero recruits Paul Blake (Scott Bakula, Quantum Leap), a 34-year-old former high school star whose field of dreams turned out to be the family farm. Blake still has the arm, but can he score with a team that includes a samurai lineman, a butterfingered receiver, and a Samoan strongman with eyes for the placekicker (Kathy Ireland)?

Wenger fights to raise Arsenal spirits

Posted April 23, 2011 12:44:00

Arsene Wenger faces a fight to convince his players that Arsenal can still win the Premier League title as it prepares for a crucial clash at Bolton.

Wenger's side travels to the Reebok stadium with morale at a low ebb after the Gunners squandered leads to draw their last two games against Liverpool and Tottenham.

They conceded a last-minute penalty against Liverpool last Sunday and threw away a two-goal advantage to finish 3-3 against Tottenham in the north London derby on Wednesday.

Arsenal has drawn five of its last six league matches and is six points behind Manchester United when it could have been breathing down the necks of the Premier League leaders.

The Gunners have even lost second place to resurgent Chelsea and France right-back Bacary Sagna revealed the lack of belief in the Arsenal camp when he conceded that the title is almost out of reach.

Failure to win at Bolton this weekend would end Arsenal's fading hopes, yet Wenger is refusing to give up on catching United.

"Chelsea are back in and they play Manchester United. We have games we know we can win, at some stage it will be down to us. We will fight," Wenger said.

"We are on a 16-game run unbeaten but recently we didn't get enough points with too many draws. That is what we want to turn by the end of the season."

Sagna is less confident than Wenger of closing the gap on United.

While Arsenal's style of play has drawn plaudits, Sagna believes his team lacks the steel to close out matches.

Against Spurs even at 3-1 up the Gunners kept attacking, which left them exposed at the back and allowed their bitter rivals back into the match.

And Sagna admits they need to play more conservatively.

"We are drawing too many games to be champions. Especially at home, we have dropped many points," he said.

"From now, we need to look forward and we must not drop any more points.

"We have to play United on May 1 and we have to win. They will have some hard games coming, it is not easy for them, and it is down to us if we want to win something.

"We know we have to win our last games. We need to think about our team. We do not need to focus on other teams.

"We have to play each other and it will be a good game. We need to focus and win."

Abou Diaby is a doubt for the Bolton game after coming off early in the second half against Spurs with a hamstring, but long-term injuries aside, Wenger has an otherwise clean bill of health.

Meanwhile, Bolton will also be seeking redemption following its 5-0 loss to Stoke in the FA Cup semi-final last week.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has urged his men to forget about their capitulation at Wembley and instead focus on maintaining their top 10 place in the Premier League.

Coyle is set to make changes to the side that lost to Stoke last Sunday, with on-loan Chelsea striker Dean Sturridge likely to lead the line after being cup-tied for the semi-final.

Matt Taylor and Mark Davies should fill the spaces in central midfield, after the pair contributed to an improved showing after coming on at Wembley.

Chelsea may risk Torres over Drogba

Posted April 23, 2011 07:00:00

Carlo Ancelotti has admitted misfiring striker Fernando Torres could return in place of in-form Didier Drogba for Chelsea's vital London derby against West Ham on Saturday.

Ancelotti's side have been revitalised since the Italian dropped Torres and recalled Drogba, with successive wins over West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham lifting Chelsea back into the title race.

Torres has gone 893 minutes without a goal since his British record transfer from Liverpool, while Drogba's powerful presence has helped Chelsea score six goals in its last two matches.

With Torres in the team, Chelsea slumped tamely out of the Champions League against Manchester United.

But, even though the Blues are only six points behind leaders Manchester United, Ancelotti may bring Torres back against the struggling Hammers.

"Maybe I can use some rotation to maintain the players' freshness," Ancelotti said on Friday.

"It wouldn't be easy to leave Drogba out, but there's a chance we could leave him out on Saturday.

"We started with Torres against (Manchester) City. We won the game when Didier came on.

"It might be a good solution to give him the last 30 minutes of the game because he's fresh and fit."

Chelsea has scored just one goal in its last eight matches while Torres has been on the pitch.

But Ancelotti is unconcerned by statistics and he believes Torres will rediscover his form with the help of his team-mates.

"To score one goal, for him, could be the best medicine. If the players, the team-mates, help him, I'm happy," he said.

"That means there's a good relationship with each other in the squad.

"Everyone has to know that Fernando is the present and the future of this club. We cannot judge now the moment. He will play a lot of games for Chelsea."

Chelsea will be expected to continue its revival against a West Ham side fighting against relegation, but Ancelotti said: "At this stage of the season, every game is difficult.

"It's difficult to prepare, to stay concentrated, but we have to know we'll have a tough game.

"When one teams needs the points to stay up, they will do more than 100 per cent.

"For this reason, we have to be ready. It's a very tough competition, the Premier League, so anything can happen.

"Obviously, I would like to be in United's position, six points ahead. That's a lot at this stage of the season."

Berbatov doubtful for Man United

Posted April 23, 2011 06:37:00

The English Premier League's leading scorer Dimitar Berbatov could miss Manchester United's match against Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"We'll see what he's like today in view of tomorrow," said manager Alex Ferguson in reference to the Bulgarian striker's groin strain.

Berbatov, on 21 goals, leads Carlos Tevez by two in the leading scorers' list.

United midfielder Darren Fletcher is nearing a return in around 10 days after a virus.

"When he does come back, he'll go straight into the team. He'll be a very, very important player to come back," added Ferguson.

Right back Rafael da Silva is available to face Everton.

Meanwhile Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no new injury worries apart from midfielder Abou Diaby who picked up a calf strain against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

"As for anybody else, I haven't seen the players because they were off yesterday (Thursday). I will see them later," Wenger said on Friday.

Tottenham could be without PFA player of the year Gareth Bale for Saturday's home game against West Bromwich Albion.

"He has to be a doubt," said manager Harry Redknapp.

"I don't want to say he's definitely out just in case there is a chance but at the moment you wouldn't think he would be fit."

Defenders Ledley King (groin), Jonathan Woodgate (groin), and Alan Hutton (knee) remain sidelined. Midfielder Wilson Palacios also has a knee problem.

Press pick Parker as EPL's best

Posted April 22, 2011 21:37:00

West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker was named England's Footballer of the Year after one of the closest votes for years.

Parker topped the Football Writers' Association poll of journalists to win the oldest award of its type, which dates back to 1948 when Stanley Matthews was the first winner.

He finished ahead of Gareth Bale of Tottenham Hotspur, who was named the Professional Football Association's (PFA) Player of the Year.

Parker, who has been inspirational in his side's fight against relegation, is the first West Ham player to win the award since Bobby Moore in 1964.

FWA chairman Steve Bates will present the award at a gala dinner in London on May 12.

"He has been the most consistent player in the Hammers team fighting against relegation from the Premier League this season and has forced his way back into the England team," Bates said.

"He has been an inspiration for the Hammers and that tipped the vote his way in one of the closest polls for many years."

Auburn SEC Classics 3-DVD Set

Auburn SEC Classics 3-DVD SetThis 3-DVD set includes these classic SEC match-ups: vs. Tennessee / October 4, 2003 The unranked Tigers played the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers in Auburn, Ala. This is widely viewed as one of the best first halves the Tigers have ever had against such a highly ranked opponent. Auburn held Tennessee to one touchdown the entire first half. This was enough to stifle a fourth-quarter comeback by Tennessee. The Tigers hung on and beat the Vols, 28-21. vs. Georgia / November 12, 2005 Auburn traveled to Athens, Ga., for the 'Deep South s Oldest Rivalry.' This was a hard-fought battle between the two rivals. The break for the Tigers came when Devin Aromashodu threw a fourth-down pass for a 63-yard gain, setting up John Vaughn's 20-yard field goal with six seconds remaining that gave No. 15 Auburn a thrilling 31-30 victory over ninth-ranked Georgia on a Saturday night. vs. Florida / September 29, 2007 Auburn visited The Swamp for a showdown at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. Freshman Wes Byrum kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Tigers to a 20-17 victory over the fourth-ranked Gators. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the defending national champions and gave the Gators their first home loss under Coach Urban Meyer, his first since 2005.

Gridiron Generals: A Hard-Hitting History of College Football

Gridiron Generals: A Hard-Hitting History of College FootballIt is a cliche to say that it is more than a game, but in the case of football it is patently true. For more than a century, the events that have transpired on the field on Autumn Saturdays (and, more recently, Sundays) have captivated the nation, fueling dreams and showcasing courage and teamwork, grace and power. GRIDIRON GENERALS is a fascinating journey through the history of the game, focusing on legendary college players and teams. Here are the stories of innovators like Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner, Knute Rockne and George Heisman. Flickering films capture the skill of stars like Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and Joe Namath (before the guarantee). And here, too, is the saga of how a game that first materialized on college campuses in the late 19th century became an essential part of our national culture today, avidly followed by millions of people who live for the crisp, clear, Fall days when their heroes hit the gridiron. Filled with the memories of the game's greatest players and coaches and packed with footage of their finest moments, this is a must-have video for any football fan.

Robbie Kruse uninjured but suspended

Updated April 21, 2011 15:38:00

Melbourne Victory will lose star striker Robbie Kruse for their defining Asian Champions League clash in a fortnight, but not because of injury.

Kruse was cleared of any injury to his knee after being stretchered off in his side's come-from-behind 2-1 win over Tianjin Teda on Wednesday night.

However, Kruse, midfielder Grant Brebner and defender Surat Sukha are all suspended for the Victory's critical home match against Gamba Osaka on May 4.

Kruse and Brebner were both booked on Wednesday night, thereby exceeding their disciplinary quota for the tournament and received one-match bans.

Sukha was sent off late in the encounter and banned automatically for the next match.

For the third time in Asia's premier club soccer competition, the Victory looked like being put out of their misery approaching half-time in the clash with China's Tianjin Teda on Wednesday night.

Instead, the win puts them within sight of making the ACL round of 16 for the first time if they can secure maximum points against Gamba Osaka.

Caretaker coach Mehmet Durakovic was thrilled by the Victory's win over the Group E leaders - his first since taking over from the sacked Ernie Merrick.

The former Victory youth team coach is confident that as the weeks go by, the players are responding well to his gameplan involving more width and sharper movement and passing.

"Okay, it's going to take a bit of time for (them to completely learn) the structure I want them to play," Durakovic said.

"Slowly but surely it's coming. Hopefully we can go on to bigger and better things in a couple of weeks' time."

Both the Victory and Sydney FC - who beat another Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua 3-2 midweek - are back in the hunt to salvage Australian pride in a competition A-League clubs have regularly failed to come to grips with.

Only two Australian clubs have ever advanced to the tournament's second stage.

Adelaide United was Australia's best ever performer in getting to the 2008 ACL final, while Newcastle was beaten in the round of 16 in 2009.

Copa Del Ray Cup slips, falls under bus

Posted April 21, 2011 17:35:00

Spain's most treasured football trophy, the King's Cup, slipped from the hands of a Real Madrid player Thursday, fell under the team bus and was reportedly crushed into pieces.

Defender Sergio Ramos held the 15 kg trophy above his head in an open-top bus as the triumphant team were about to enter Madrid's central Cibeles Square, packed with fans partying throughout the night.

But he lost his grip and the Cup, which Real Madrid got their hands on just hours earlier for the first time since 1993 after a 1-0 victory over Barcelona, fell in front of the bus.

The team bus then ran over the silver trophy before stopping.

Police rushed to retrieve the Cup and gave it to the bus driver but it was not displayed to the public again.

Emergency services workers picked up at least 10 pieces of the trophy, news radio Cadena Ser reported.

"It fell, it fell, it's fine, it's fine," Ramos told reporters when asked about the slip.

Ill Houllier recovering in hospital

Updated April 21, 2011 19:20:00

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier was recovering in hospital on Thursday after being taken ill the night before.

The 63-year-old Frenchman is said to be in a comfortable condition and was well enough to speak to the Premier League club's chief executive Paul Faulkner.

But he could be kept in hospital for a few days and assistant boss Gary McAllister is likely to be in charge for Saturday's home clash with Stoke.

McAllister was also expected to take charge of training on Thursday.

Villa made no immediate comment but were set to release a statement later Thursday on Houllier's condition.

Houllier had open heart surgery in October 2001 while he was managing Liverpool, after suffering severe chest pains during a match against Leeds.

When he took the position at Villa, Houllier revealed he had consulted his heart surgeon before accepting the job.

He said he had returned to speak to Dr Abbas Rashid, the man who led the team who performed an 11-hour operation on the Frenchman, and was given a clean bill of health.

He has had a rocky ride this season with some Villa supporters calling for him to be sacked, but results have improved in recent weeks and Villa have climbed into the top half of the Premier League.

Current Liverpool boss Kenny Daglish revealed that his club's former doctor was at the hospital with Houllier.

"Of course our thoughts are with him," Dalglish said.

"We don't know too much about it and there is no point in us being speculative but your health is more important than anything, so we wish him well.

"Doc (Mark) Waller is there, who was the club doctor here when Gerard fell ill in 2001, so he's got a good guy beside him and I'm sure the people there will do everything they can to help."

Tony Pulis, manager of FA Cup finalists Stoke, also sent Houllier his best wishes ahead of Stoke's visit to Villa Park this weekend and admitted the pressure of leading a top Premier League club can get to anyone.

"Everyone in football will wish Gerard a swift recovery, we hope he is well. I don't know how bad it is but I am sure he will get well looked after," Pulis said.

"Pressure is part of the job, you get used to it. Irrespective of what medical care you get, nothing stops you from getting excited on the touchline or carrying the pressure on your shoulders if things aren't going too well.

"If it's just happened, Gerard will have the team prepared and Gary McAllister works closely with Gerard so there shouldn't be too much disruption for them."

Real claims dramatic Cup win over Barca

Updated April 21, 2011 09:40:00

Real Madrid claimed its first trophy under Jose Mourinho when Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic extra-time winner secured a 1-0 Copa del Rey final victory over arch-rivals Barcelona.

With penalties looming in a tense and occasionally brutal clash at Valencia's Mestalla stadium, the Portuguese forward hung in the air and nodded home a brilliant 103rd-minute header from Angel Di Maria's superb centre.

Di Maria was sent off after receiving his second yellow card just before the end of extra time.

Real's first domestic cup since 1993 came in Mourinho's debut season since joining from Inter Milan, denying Pep Guardiola's Barca, which leads La Liga by eight points, the chance of a second treble in three seasons.

The Spanish giants are also due to meet in the two-legged Champions League semi-final on April 27 and May 3.

"Winning a trophy is always good," a weary-looking Mourinho said.

"I try to do my work as well as possible and I am tired now but very pleased.

"It gives me some tranquility, nothing more, and I will continue with my work."

Mourinho, who won the King's Cup in 1997 and 1998 as assistant to Barca coaches Bobby Robson and Louis Van Gaal, has now won cups in four different countries following triumphs in his native Portugal with Porto, in England with Chelsea and in Italy with Inter.

"In my opinion it was a great football match," he said. "I think we played well against a great team and beating a great team has more value."

Real successfully closed down Barca's creative midfielders and pacy forwards and had much the better of the first half before Pepe crashed a header off the post in the 44th minute with goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto well beaten.

Barca had failed to muster a shot on target but the second period was a different story as it utterly dominated possession, Andres Iniesta and Pedro forcing fine saves from keeper Iker Casillas.

However, even World Player of the Year Lionel Messi was unable to break the deadlock and Ronaldo almost put Real ahead on two occasions, the later when he sped on to Xabi Alonso's pass in the eighth minute of extra time but his arrowed drive whistled narrowly wide.

He made no mistake five minutes later and his powerful header sent the white half of the stadium into raptures and had them singing Mourinho's name and lauding skipper Casillas who held aloft the King's Cup.

Guardiola was philosophical in defeat and said he and his players now had to concentrate on recuperating for Saturday's La Liga game at home to Osasuna.

"First of all I want to congratulate Real Madrid," the former Barca and Spain midfielder told a news conference. "Life is like that. You can't always win."

Barca are the record King's Cup winners with 25, while Real now have 18.

Arsenal hopes fade as Spurs rescue draw

Updated April 21, 2011 07:30:00

Arsenal's title challenge was all but extinguished on Thursday morning as Tottenham recovered from two goals down to rescue a 3-3 draw in a breathless north London derby, while Chelsea went above the Gunners into second place after beating Birmingham 3-1.

Arsene Wenger's side were on course to move within four points of leaders Manchester United after taking a 3-1 lead at White Hart Lane.

But Arsenal's soft underbelly was again exposed as Rafael Van der Vaart scored a second-half penalty equaliser to condemn the Gunners to a fifth draw in six league games.

As a result they lost second place to a suddenly resurgent Chelsea, which is now six points behind United with a crucial trip to Old Trafford looming in May.

"It is not over, we have to fight and continue to battle," manager Arsene Wenger told Sky Sports.

"We had an outstanding first half and in the second we dropped physically because we had a difficult game on Sunday.

"Maybe the second goal was decisive becasue we needed to go with a two-goal difference at half-time. We had an outstanding spirit and we need to keep battling until the last day."

"We will fight like mad for the next game. Of course we can still win the title."

After the pain of Sunday's draw against Liverpool, Arsenal needed an early boost and they got it when Theo Walcott lit the fuse on an explosive first half by sprinting onto Cesc Fabregas's pass and slotting past Heurelho Gomes.

Arsenal's lead was short-lived as Dutch international Van der Vaart beat the offside trap to score with a ferocious finish two minutes later.

But the Gunners were back in front in the 12th minute when midfielder Samir Nasri hit a low drive from the edge of the area that took a slight deflection off Spurs defender Michael Dawson before beating Gomes.

Wenger's team increased their lead before half-time when Robin van Persie fired home from close range in the 40th minute after Gomes blocked his initial header from a Walcott cross.

Even then Spurs refused to surrender. Harry Redknapp's side had come from two goals behind to beat Arsenal 3-2 earlier this season and recovered from 4-2 down to earn a 4-4 draw against the Gunners in 2008.

Tom Huddlestone gave Spurs a lifeline four minutes later with a powerful long-range effort that fizzed through Van der Vaart's legs and beyond Wojciech Szczesny.

And the hosts completed a superb comeback in the 70th minute when Szczesny fouled Aaron Lennon and Van der Vaart stroked in the resulting penalty.

But the draw did not help Tottenham in its bid to secure a Champions League spot, with Manchester City still a point ahead in fourth with a game in hand.

"That was one of the great games in my opinion. It was a little classic," Redknapp said.

"We came back from an almost impossible position. There is a fantastic spirit at this club and we never give in."

Chelsea looming

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea produced a second dominant display in five days to keep a foothold in the title race.

After beating West Bromwich Albion 3-1 on Saturday, Carlo Ancelotti's side avenged their 1-0 loss against Birmingham earlier this season to revive belief they can retain the title.

"With a six-point lead Manchester United is still too far but we have to believe," Ancelotti said.

"I never said the title race was over. After this we have to play five games. We have to win them all and see what happens."

Chelsea took the lead in the third minute when Paulo Ferreira's cross was flicked on by Didier Drogba and French winger Florent Malouda pounced to poke home.

Ancelotti again left British record signing Fernando Torres and France striker Nicolas Anelka on the bench as he opted for Drogba as his lone forward supported by Malouda and Salomon Kalou.

Kalou justified his inclusion as he scored with a sensational strike that saw him beat two Birmingham defenders before drilling an unstoppable shot past Ben Foster in the 26th minute.

Malouda put the game out of Birmingham's reach in the 62nd minute when he headed in a cross from debutant Ryan Bertrand.

Sebastian Larsson got one back for Birmingham with a 76th minute after David Luiz fouled Matt Derbyshire, but it was little consolation for Alex McLeish's team, who remain five points above the relegation zone.

Ten-man Victory turns tables on Tianjin

Updated April 20, 2011 21:38:00

Ten-man Melbourne Victory has resurrected its Asian Champions League hopes, beating Group E leaders Tianjin Teda 2-1 at Docklands on Wednesday night.

Two Victory goals in the minute prior to half-time turned the match entirely on its head after the home side trailed.

The win has lifted the Victory back into contention to qualify in the top two of their group and make the round of 16.

Tianjin grabbed an early lead when striker Chen Tao dispossessed Victory skipper Kevin Muscat mid-pitch, ran and finished sweetly in the 37th minute.

It was a deserved lead after the visitors had the better of the first period.

But the Victory stunned the Chinese side in the 44th minute, when Tianjin goalkeeper Zhao Yanming failed to deal with a curling Carlos Hernandez free-kick from 30 metres.

Then a minute later, China national team defender Cao Yang was adjudged to have fouled Robbie Kruse in the box.

Muscat made amends for his error by slotting home the penalty to give his side a half-time lead.

In a niggly match with several melees and nine yellow cards, Victory defender Surat Sukha was sent off for a second yellow card with eight minutes remaining.

The Victory now have a win and a draw from their four matches.

The other Group E match between Japan's Gamba Osaka and Jeju United of South Korea is being played later on Wednesday night.

Melbourne Victory: 2 (C Hernandez 43', K Muscat pen 45')

Tianjin Teda: 1 (T Chen 37')
